Hi there,
Not sure if this works properly coz the last time I posted I never
found out if it appeared or not and there were no responses so things
don't look good.
My recycling has not been collected for 4 weeks now. I 'phone the
council to ask why and was told that despite the fact I followed their
instructions about where to place my one box (seeing as how my other
boxes were stolen?) the operatives of those lovely lorries wouldn't
walk down a few steps at 6 in the morning to pick up my box and the
bags of bottles that I had put with it. The 'lovely and helpful' guy
at the council said I have to put it all on the path outside my house.
He then refused to comprehend that a) it would block the path for all
the buggies that get pushed along and that b) seeing as how I would
have to put it all out the night before because of the rather early
collection time, most of the bottles would be broken by the more
unsavoury elements in the area!
I'm very much in favour of recycling as much as possible so we can all
make a start in stemming the environmental disasters that are befallin
the world at present, but surely the council has to be a bit more
flexible.
Cheers,
Tom.

Does anyone have any advice on disposing responsibly of stuff like
electronic equipment? Also, items containing refrigerants. Can the council
deal with these, or is it best to go to an independent group like Magpie?

If you haven't already tried them Shabitat (run by Magpie I think) have
taken pretty much all (working) electronics and furniture, curtains etc
I've taken round. I think they will collect too if you ring them.
They're near the Vague Gyratory on the Lewes Road.

Anyone know where I can recycle cartons and tetrapacs? The council kerbside
scheme won't touch them as they say the nearest recycling plant is in
Scotland. making it uneconomic. Fair enough. However, Magpie take them so
do they send them up north?
As cartons are a good 30% of my waste, and difficult to avoid, I don't just
want to chuck them - I'd love to be a zero waste person. Maybe I should
renew my Magpie service. It seems mad that given the amount of things in
cartons and tetrapacs that there isn't a plant closer.
Some years ago I was on a campsite in Luxemburg. Even here it was possible
to recycle cartons, yogurt pots and the like - why is Britain still so
behind.

Yes you can recycle tetra packs through Magpie. For some reason the council has
refused to include them in their kerbside collection but Scotland is not
necessarily far compared to India where it is speculated that some of the
recycling gets taken!
One way to go more zero waste is to make your own juices and soya milk - I
bought a soya milk maker which works out much cheaper and much greener.

My last mailing today .... yes Dave your are right - the Council's priority
has to be to sort out the issue of recycling for flats and to deal with the
question of food waste - which should never go in landfill ..... I will be
pushing hard for that to be done as quickly as possible . There is also
the question how we ensure that business and trade waste is recycled (just
so you know the Council is responsible for domestic waste but not
commercial waste - nevertheless we must use what influence we have. ) There
will be a big push to continue the increase in recycling rates , amongst
other things because landfill taxes will be increasing and it will cost a
lot more to put material in landfill. There will be consultation soon on
how we go forward over the next ten years under what will be called the
"Waste management Plan", which will be looking at things like carrots (as
well as sticks) - any innovative ideas etc. - More information to come
about how that is going to work when I have it.
I hope we can get away from talking about "rubbish" as something you "throw
away" (there is nowhere to "throw" it) and see material as a resource -

I have to drive from Hove to Shoreham to recycle my cardboard and plastic

Hi Joyce
You could also put pressure on the Royal Mail not to deliver so much junk
unaddressed mail through peoples letter boxes, it would be interested to
know how many tones of unaddressed mail gets delivered through peoples
letter boxes in B&H.
I believe that a similar thing was proposed to full council some time ago (I
may be wrong), but the Labour party turned this down, after all it is our
council tax money that is used to recycle this, or for people that don't
recycle the council has to pay for this to be dumped in landfill.
Every day we here now new reports on what damage we are doing to the
environment, so every one needs to act more responsibly, and if the Royal
mail needs to save money, perhaps they could be persuaded to reuse their red
elastic bands that are littering our streets, and yet again the council has
to foot the bill to clean these up.

yes ban junk mail or make them pay massive fees to send the stuff.
I hate it and get loads at home and even more at my office. Yes i have taken my
name off the mailing lists etc but still it comes. I used to send it all back
to sender but that doesn't seem to work in majority of cases and also takes
time out of my busy day to mark them all and then take them all to the postbox.
ban junk mail!!! it's just a total waste of resources.
