Hi, I'm Kathy Derrick. I work for the Living Rivers Project- a small team
working with people -community groups, organisations, ngo's etc. to care for,
learn about and enjoy rivers and streams. We have been going since 1993 and if
you are interested in what we do you can find some information on
www.bristol.gov.uk/rivers
That stretch of the Malago near Brixham Road that Celia and Stephanie want to
clear out hasn't got any 'group' associated with it that we know of- it is the
'missing' link between the Kingfisher Group and Malago Valley Conservation
Group. The Kingfisher Group, including Chris Orlik, has done some litter picks
on the banks but there is usually lots of gross rubbish in the water. We would
be more than happy to join an effort to do a litter clear up here. The common
understanding is that the owner of the land on each side of a river owns the
river up to the mid point equally. Clearing litter is a discretionary
responsibility of owners - they don't have to clear it if there isn't a serious
flood risk. There are contracts in place by the council for some stretches.
Doing a clear-up is usually okay by the owners but obviously h&s is important.
Is anyone interested in meeting up soon to get the ball rolling for a clear-up
before the birds and vegetation get going? I can meet in the day and up to 7pm.
