Steve's percentage-having-at-home-broadband figures are a good place to
start, to evaluate how well the U.S., and Minneapolis in particular, are
doing in terms of access to the web.
 
But what I read elsewhere tells another part of the story: outstate
Minnesota is on track to zip right past Minneapolis in terms of net
capacity and speed. That high-speed internet with fiber-optic lines that's
1,000 times faster than what our phone company and Comcast provide, which
the Wayzata- or Minnetonka-based U.S. Internet provides to only a few
places downtown or near it, is spreading in outstate communities.
 
And companies like Google, which are providing that
astonishingly-high-speed fiber-optic internet to some U.S. cities, have not
even considered Minneapolis for such a roll-out. Because Minneapolis made
the mistake of contracting with U.S. Internet.
 
Minneapolis is now not just behind Europe and Japan and Hong Kong in speed
and capacity. We're behind towns like Bemidji or Worthington..
