Hi everyone!
As many of you might already know, the Oakland Brigade held a CityCamp and
from all accounts we accomplished something incredible!
The event was organized by a handful of us, including Steve Spiker - who
did an amazing job at setting a positive tone for the event and making sure
everything was in place. And, of course, Jack was rock at critical points
throughout the planning and the execution. Since then, I've been getting
lots positive feedback from city folks and I think we've laid a good
foundation for next years fellows.
Checkout the email (below) that was sent to all city staff right after the
event:

Approximately 120 professionals and residents connected Saturday, December
1 at the First Annual CityCamp Unconference to re-imagine how the web,
online applications, and technology will shape the future of Oakland. City
representatives included six employees from Public Works, making us the
most represented agency alongside the City Administrators Office! ****

This new volunteer group - Open Oakland/Code for Oakland/Brigade - is
basically some wonderful and passionate geeks who want to volunteer to
help the city! At first you might be cautious and wary, but they are our
new age city advocates - just like our tried and true volunteers who wear
vests and bring shovels, these new style digital folks, use an I pad, the
cloud and zeros & ones to engage the citizenry, help govt get the word
out, make things easier- faster-better! They are committed to Oakland, and
are generous with their skills and amazing abilities and know how. ****

We can look forward to a whole new push in communications, data,
transparency, ease of access because of these peoples efforts to work,
partner with us and join in to the larger civic conversation.****

*PWA Representatives Included:*
Kristine Shaff, John McCabe & Brittany Gabel from Administrative
Services****
Garrett Fitzgerald & David Finacom from Environmental Services****
Brian Kimball from Engineering & Construction****

*What Happened? *
At Saturdays Unconference impromptu sessions emerged through a
collective effort to pinpoint ideas most relevant to participants,
including issues such as web-driven transparency & open data, civic
engagement, and new ways to celebrate Oaklands unique community and
flavor! Business representatives and techies from Code for America got a
crash course on City Government 101, presented by Karen Boyd, the Citywide
Communications Director, while city employees were exposed to new
technological possibilities to enhance efficiency and accountability. In
short, the event was a remarkable mix of problem solvers eager to address
issues head on through collaboration and innovation. ****
** **
Mayor Jean Quan, Council Member Libby Schaaf, and future Council Member
Noel Gallo attended. City Administrator Deanna Santana attended and
delivered the closing key note. ****
The event was led by Nicole Neditch, City Online Engagement Officer, who
works for the Communications Office within the City Administrators
Office. ****
* *
*Outcomes: *
*New relationships*: Kristine Shaff collected the names and contact
information for tech saavy individuals eager to volunteer their time and
train city employees! ****
*New ideas*: A mobile application to track inspections? There is a vendor
who is interested in working with us as a pilot using IPADS to track and
record Inspection data.****
*Adopt a Drain will be up and running *in the next little bit. It was
featured at the closing session as the newest Code for America Brigade!
City Administrators Office will be announcing it soon. Environmental
Services got in early and deep to get a PWA mobile app, as the 1stdeliverable!
**
*A new idea also was to Adopt a Page* as in web page. Kristine volunteer
PWAs web.****
*Website Advisory Committee* is another outcome that is likely to be done.**
