I just want to say that I am totally down with this! I just came from
Seor Wong and had an amazing couple of cheap small plates, and a
couple of pints of Ichiban. What a cool place. Great DJ.
There are several good St Paul bars that need our help. Who's with
me? Let's do this!
This can be our next SPIF outing, eh, Andrew?
Bob Parker
Bob
I think you have a terrific idea here. When is it? Sign me up and let me know
how I can help. Businesses lost big time during the takeover of west seventh
and I'm all for helping them out because after all they are my neighbors!
Well on Bob's review, I stopped in for some lunch at Seor Wong the
other day and had two of those small plates and something less than a
pint of Kirin Ichiban (got charged for 22 oz., but it was more like
12, I think; I paid the bill anyway and over-tipped on top of it);
everything -- plates, beer, service -- was great, but I guess I
should have found some company aside from the waitress (I suspect I
caused the billing error with my chit-chat).
So when and where are we going to meet and visit the scenes of the
crimes, of one group or the other, as a SPIFfy group? How do we
choose whom to grace with our dubious patronage?
I'm looking forward to it, as I seldom have frequented Downtown St.
Paul Bars, even though I picked up customers at a few while driving
cab a few years back now -- although I've gotten a beer or two at
Great Waters and stop in at Mickey's and Ruam Mit for some grub now
and then, and even took an old Irish-American friend to Gallivans on
St. Patrick's day for corned beef and cabbage -- but I usually stay
closer to home, especially when I drink and crawl or get 'crawling'
drunk.
Should we pick a typically slow night during the week for bars, find
our way to a rendezvous, and begin our crawl from one impacted
business to the next? With the shellacking I'm taking in the market,
I'm going to need another good paying job to pay for the outing,
though; I guess I may not be able to afford it -- maybe I'll just buy
some booze and crawl around the house. I'd rather puke in St. Paul,
though, or maybe just have a moderately good time there.
Andrew, Andrew Andrew, where are you? Taking a much needed rest I would hope. But where is the lead? Taking off from Bill and Bob, I used to participate in pub crawls with a ski club or two. But I don't know if I could handle a similar one these days. Either financially or physically. However, I suggest we come up with a pub crawl with a list of venues and a schedule where we will be. Let me suggest figure a route that brings us back to the starting point. Now that could be downtown proper or maybe a couple blocks west on Old Fort road/West Seventh. We could do Kincaids, Great Waters, Wild Tymes, a short walk to McGoverns, Tom Reids, then back to the new joint occupying the space of the Former Fhima's. Depending on when Andrew gets this together, the new joint on 6th and Wacouta where Knight times was going to be migh be open. If the plan if scheduled right we could even stop at Mickey's Diner for a bite to eat. Mike Fratto Payne Phalen Please help those who don't get enough to eat. http://oyh.org http://hungersolutions.org The future depends more on what we do between now and then Than what we did in the past.
I'm with Mike as to whether I can handle a pub crawl at my advancing age;
however, I'd love to try and it would be a nice symbolic way for me to retake
St. Paul after experiencing the "police state" during the RNC.
Super! New blood! You're in, Renate. This is an economic stimulus
package that's easy for all legal ages to swallow. Just pace yourself,
and don't throw good money after bad beer. Hopefully 10 people will spend
$10 at each place, for a whopping $500 boost to the Cultural Corridor.
I'm hearing/thinking:
Senor Wong's 5:00 - 5:30
Matty B's 5:30 - 6:00
Pop! 6:00 - 6:30
Great Waters 6:30 - 7:00
The Liffey 7:30 - 4:00am
Tipplers should take a bus, cab, or tricycle. Tea-totallers welcome,
especially those with nice cars (might want to re-Scotchgard your seats).
I nominate next Tuesday the 16th, for no particular reason.

I'll second that nomination. Hey it's a day after payday. Hows about adding
Cossettas and McGoverns to that list though.
I'm in. Perhaps we can add Cossettas and McGoverns to another crawl focusing
on West 7th, which frankly merits a whole series considering how many watering
holes West 7th offers? There's a limit to how many places we can go in one
evening :-)
As a Downtown resident, I must point out that Andrew's list of 5 bars leaves
out quite a few candidates; however, it is a very nice mix. Any more than 5
bars and I would probably not know where I was anyway. I can walk home from any
of them in less than 10 minutes.
I have not been to Pop yet. I will take a look at it when I walk home tonight.
I did not think that it was going to have liquor and I like to have a cocktail
before dinner. Its MPLS location has gotten some good and consistent reviews
over a couple of years.
Yes, a West Seventh Crawl is quite an undertaking, and not for amateurs. I
took my strapping 23-year-old nephew, who is genetically engineered to
withstand such abuse, on a partial tour this summer and even he was
rendered incapable of carrying me back home. We did not stop at every one
of these oases by any means, but we gave it a run for our money:
Downstream from home:
Bennett's
Skarda's
Shamrock's
Joe & Stan's
Glockenspiel
Mancini's
Degidio's
Grand 7
Tom Reid's
El Patio
Downtowner
McGovern's
The Liffey
Eagle Street Grill
That doesn't include these upstream:
J R Mac's
Casa Vieja
Champp's
fka Starting Gate
Or these off the beaten path:
Lucky Foxx
The Spot
Skinner's
Tavern On The Avenue
Then one could add places with beer like:
Famous Dave's
Chris & Rob's
Sibley Plaza joints
My wallet's getting thinner just thinking about the possibilities. I'd
suggest a "Passport Club" type of contest or race, but that might not go
over very well with Mothers Against Plowed Pedestrians. Nevertheless, we
could start at The Liffey and whoever makes it to Bennett's (14 bars) wins
a trip to Hazelden down the street - rumor is they didn't pick up much RNC
business either.

Re: [SPIF] after assessment--Pub Crawl!
So.... Are we in for tomorrow?
Who's coming?
Did you know that the Black Dog has $4.00 Newcastles for Happy Hour?
I think if we're prudent, and quick, we can make most of the venues if we don't
all drink full pints. I plan on alternating bars--- mostly because I just came
from a wedding in Milwaukee, and I'm still feeling it. Plus, I have a wine
tasting on Thursday I need to be sharp for. But 4-6 is, I think, the standard,
and if we move along, we should do OK. I will be working until 4 anyway, and if
you join in, you can see where.
Tonight's The Night
(Hard Cores can start early at The Black Dog)
> Senor Wong's 5:00 - 5:30, 111 Kellogg Blvd, Kellogg Square, at Robert
St, enter on 4th St
> Matty B's 5:30 - 6:00 on Wabasha between 4th & 5th Sts, former
Gallivan's site
> Pop! 6:00 - 6:30 Lawson Building, (former Fhima's site) corner
of Wabasha and 6th
> Great Waters 6:30 - 7:00 426 St Peter St, Hamm Building, on Seventh
Place, growlers available
(not sure what happened to 7:00 to 7:30... a wrinkle in the Space-Time
Continuum... such is the life of a pub crawler...)
> The Liffey 7:30 - 8:00 175 W. 7th St, in Holiday Inn, Seven Corners
No doubt we will be strung out along the route, and the times are only a
guide (although I will attempt to adhere to the schedule).
Put your money where your uvula is and come out and play. Be safe.

Re: [SPIF] after assessment--Pub Crawl!
Looking forward to meeting SPIF folk. Depending on when I manage to escape
work, I will connect with ya'll at Senor Wong's or Matty B's. Nancy Bolin says
she'll meet up with us at the Liffey.
