Hi All,
Last night I had a very disturbing interaction with a door to door salesman
claiming he was from Qwest/Direct TV. I had been decorating our porch with the
glass/screen door closed. I told him several times that I wasn't interested
and then he tried to actually get in the door after I told him "NO! Go away!".
Thankfully, I had my door locked! He didn't have a marked vehicle out on the
street. I watched him go to three darkened houses and try the door on one of
them when he didn't get a response. I called the police, but he had
disappeared between two houses before the police got there.
Has anyone else had this problem? Is he just a pushy salesman? Does
Qwest/Direct TV even go door to door? I'm trying to determine how much I need
to follow up with the police or Qwest on this.

This weekend a guy came to our door on 28th Ave. near 44th St. (and had
been going to all of our neighbors houses, too - I watched him for a
little while before he made it to our door). He showed me a Qwest badge
and gave me a quick little sales pitch. He was nice enough. Not pushy.
I declined his offer and he was on his way.

Hi,
I live on the 3900 block of 29th Ave and this person came by my house
yesterday afternoon. My brother was home and was very suspicious
because there wasn't a marked truck outside. Of course my brother
didn't know the answer to any of the salesperson's questions.

Hi all -
I went to the community meeting last week (Wed) at Roosevelt HS and found the
information presented there to be very valuable. There was some discussion
about door-to-door salespeople.
We talked about the marked increase in burglary & other types of theft in the
community over the past several months and the fact posing as a door-to-door
salesperson is one way to "case" properties. Knowing that fact alone now makes
me EXTREMELY suspicious of any door-to-door salespeople I might encounter these
days (especially those who are testing doors to see if they are open & try to
open your door after you've told them you're not interested).
I also learned that ALL legitimate door-to-door salespeople must have AND
DISPLAY a permit from the city (essentially a little piece of paper with the
city logo on it and their permit number). Ask to see it & if they balk at your
request, they probably aren't legit.
As far as taking action if you see what you consider to be suspicious activity,
I think this is the bottom line: if the situation doesn't feel right to you,
then it probably isn't! CALL 911 - we are the eyes & ears of the MPD and they
need us to keep them apprised of what we're seeing in our neighborhood. If
enough of us are seeing it & think it's not legit, MPD can put the word out to
EVERYONE so that we can stop potential criminals before they get started.
The MPD has lots of good info on home safety/security on its web site, too:
http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/police/crime-prevention/. And I highly
recommend that you get to know your neighborhood's Crime Prevention Specialist;
I can tell you that Standish's Karen Notsch is a veritable font of knowledge
whenever I seek her assistance and I've heard good things about Ericsson's Sue
Roethele, too!
Be vigilant & be safe, everyone!

How many bags of candy are needed on the average halloween? We are new to
the neighborhood and are just trying to get an idea before we go to Target.

After hearing all of your concerns regarding the Qwest salesperson I contacted
Qwest to get some information. I learned that Qwest actually does do
door-to-door sales and, in fact, they have been encouraging it recently. I
also asked someoene at Qwest to contact Wendy so that they can confirm that it
was in fact an employee who came to her door, and to address any concerns Wendy
had regarding the salesperson's manner.
Remember, whenever there is suspicious, or potentially criminal activity, going
on, don't hesitate to call 911. Give them the information and they can
prioritize the calls.

A friend of my son, now a 30 year old, started his sales career doing
door-to-door sales for Qwest. This young man had graduated from Hamline
with a business degree and he was struggling to start a career, pay
rent, and make college loan payments. Grew up in SE Minneapolis and
Highland. He has left Qwest for a more responsible sales job with
another company. Qwest is a well-known and for most, a well-regarded
corporation - it was a stepping stone job. Door-to-door sales was not
why he went to college for a business degree.
I want to share this because the person at your door might be a young
person in similar straits.
