CNN and MSNBC contributor. That alone should be enough to clue in anyone who
has spent time watching the programming from either of these sources, that he
is likely to have a pronounced “progressive” or woke bias.
The following is a quote from an opinion piece by Cedric L. Alexander that was
published by CNN on June 1, 2020. He was writing these words while Minneapolis,
St. Paul, and many cities across the United States were still burning. He, like
Ilhan Omar, and the Council 9, including Cam Gordon, because of their
inflammatory rhetoric is partly responsible for the death and destruction that
their words inspired. They should be held accountable for their words just like
Donald Trump should be held accountable for his words on January 6.
“ I am a black American man who has been privileged to serve in law enforcement
for 40 years. Today, if a young person of color asks me what they should do if
a police officer stops them, I answer: Put your hands on the steering wheel
where they can be seen, cooperate and comply. And should they answer me back,
as they likely would today -- Even if I did all that, we are still getting
murdered -- I would have nothing to tell him or her. With my decades of
experience, I would have nothing to say.
“Black Americans -- mostly young men, but women as well -- are being killed by
American law officers not for anything they did but for who they are. The
killings are not accidents, statistical freaks or mistakes in judgment. They
are products of American history. Until there is a plan for reform to address
these failures of policing -- most immediately embodied in the deaths of Ahmaud
Arbery, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd -- I will continue to have nothing to
say to the young people of color who ask me what to do, how to prevent their
own deaths at the hands of police…”
“My response to Cedric Alexander: I have not had experience in law enforcement,
but, having researched many police killings, I would have plenty to say to the
young people should they ask me any of the questions put to Mr. Alexander.
"First, I would tell them about the Washington Post Fatal Force Data Base.
According to it, on an average year in the US, less than 1000 people are killed
by the police. Of those 1000, about 225, or less than a quarter are African
American. Of those, usually, less than 15 are killed unjustly.
By far most of those unjust killings are the result of a mistake. Rarely does a
police officer intentionally kill a citizen without cause, although sometimes
they, like people in all professions, are careless. That was the case in the
Daunte Wright shooting by Kimberly Potter, in Brooklyn Center.
“If a young person, especially a young Black man, were to say “Even if I did
all that, we are still getting murdered,” it would be a dereliction of duty
not to point out those simple facts from the Washington Post.
I have been researching police killings for over 10 years, and writing about
them in this forum and on my blog. I have never come across an incident where a
police officer was even accused of intentionally having killed anyone who was
behaving lawfully and who, when asked, kept their hands on the steering wheel
and was complying with the officer.
"If anyone knows of a case like that please let us know.
“The Philando Casteal case comes to mind, but he was not behaving lawfully, or
was he complying? When told repeatedly to keep his hands on the wheel, he did
not comply, and instead he began reaching for something. He was also in
possession of marijuana, an illegal substance, and a gun, a combination that
would likely make a police officer suspicious. He also had a woman and a child
on board. For both legal reasons and common sense, it is probably not a good
idea to mix marijuana, with children, cars, and guns.
“It would also be incumbent on a knowledgeable adult to tell the young person
asking, that last year, partly as the result of an inadequate quantity of
police officers, he, as a young Black male, would be far more likely to be one
of the 10,000 African Americans killed by other African Americans, than one of
the 15 people unjustly killed by the police.
“It is likely that because of his woke attitude Alexander will not be
supportive of the police and he will hire another Police Chief, like Chief
Arredondo, who will not support the police officers when they are unjustly
accused.
It is likely that, like in the case of the Mayor and the former Chief, the best
and most qualified police officers will not want to work for the new Office of
“Community Safety” leadership in Minneapolis. If that is true we will have
shortages of highly qualified police officers for years to come. We will be
unlikely to attract adequate numbers of police of any quality unless they are
given huge signing and retention bonuses.
Either way we are likely to have a higher than necessary crime rate for years
to come, while at the same time we will be paying more for our police officers
than would otherwise, be necessary. Of course we will be paying an extra
$300.000 per year for Cedric Alexander as well.
May the gods have mercy on our souls! It is unlikely that the criminals and the
pandering politicians will show any!
