The sad news Colin is that we do have Christmas lights and they are up! Look
carefully high up on the street lights and there they are. As a local trader we
were asked to contribute to the costs, which we did. Do I feel a bit conned?
Erm, yes. I thought the old Christmas lights looked dated and tired, but these
ones defy belief. Sadly the Christmas tree is ruined by awful barriers and the
fact that it's not even up straight....but at least it's a nice big tree with
good lights.

Hello Beck,
My goodness, what happened? The tiny wrap lights around the lamp posts
cannot be our only Christmas lights! One can barely see them. Surely we can
do something to add a more festive spirit and encourage shoppers in
Headington? Is there no way to make the trader ACTUALLY accountable for
this sad offering?
All the best,
Lisa

What do you feel conned about Beck?
- The fact that what you see is the most we could afford?
- The fact that there was so much opposition to the old lights that we had to
change?
- The fact that the old lights were said to be "dated", "old" and "garish",
hence the more subtle lights you can now see.
- The fact that the City Council paid, without help from City Centre traders,
for Β£38k worth of lights in the City Centre?
- The fact that the scheme which you see up is the result of discussions which
started in April last year, with all those involved not getting any financial
remuneration for their efforts?
- The fact that, without the physical efforts of just four people from the
business community and Headington Action, you would have no lights this year.
Contributing cash is all very well, but the two minutes it takes to write a
cheque is nothing compared to the hours put in by some people to make it
happen.
- The fact that STILL not quite all lampposts have the correct fittings on
them, thanks to the County Council?
- The fact that we've had to jump through bureaucratic hoops and fires just for
there to be something, anything, on the trees and lampposts in Headington.
If you still feel "conned", then please feel free to pop up to my office and
discuss your ideas for next year. We could definitely do with some more hands
on deck, and I need to find someone to hand the reigns over to as I've tried my
very best to revitalise the Business Association and have evidently not
achieved what people want.

It's no use having a go at me Neil. I contributed to these and lights and am
disappointed with the results. I'm entitled to my opinion. If more people had
contributed the lights would be better. I naively thought that the new
Christmas lights would be an improvement.

I'm not having a go at anyone Beck. All I'm saying is that people need to
understand that not all change is liked, and in the grand scheme of things with
the economic climate as it is, what you see really is what you get for the
money we managed to raise.
I'm sorry you're disappointed, but with a more joined up effort from the
Business Community next year, I don't see why anyone has to be disappointed in
the future.

Despite being smaller than I had expected, I think the lights look smart and
contemporary. Well done to Neil and the team for the efforts made - ultimately
without that we would probably have no lights at all.

As a punter, I'd sooner walk up a high street decorated with tasteful, subtle,
monochromatic Christmas lights than hideous, gaudy, Americanised coloured and
animated ones, with sleighs, reindeer, bells, Father Christmas in Coca-Cola
corporate colours etc.
I haven't been to Headington since the lights went up, but I imagine they are
the modern LED-type, which are vastly more energy-efficient than the old
coloured filament bulb-type as well as being far more tasteful.

I support Neil's comments (well, perhaps I would as one of the organising
group!). It would have been good in my view to have had more striking lighting
- such as more pronounced lighting on the lamp columns and more trees flood
lit. But we did what we could with the money we had. And I'm also getting
comments from a number of people that they like the restrained look. You can't
expect to please everyone!
Feedback (constructive please) will be very welcome. This will help us plan
next year when we could a) build on what we have (my preference) b) take it
down c) revert to the old scheme if someone is willing to organise that or b)
leave it as is. Sadly this will be without Neil who is moving on. He has done a
lot.
To confirm Noam's point, the lights in the Xmas tree and the lamp columns are
all LEDs and the floodlights in the trees are CFLs. So, all low energy.
Lots of retailers, businesses, other organisations and local councillors
contributed money to this scheme and as Treasurer of Headington Action I'd like
to thank them.

I did see the lights last night and to be honest wasn't very impressed. There
is nothing about the lights that tells you it's Christmas that we are
celebrating.Look at the difference with Cowley road, I know they never seem to
put Christmas lights up down there, but they do have lights that tell you that
they are celebrating Eid ( Incidently the lights are kept up all year?!) but at
least you know what they are celebrating, what tells you the lights in
Headington are for Christmas?

I was suprised and dissapointed to see the Christmas light offering within
Headington the other day. I do understand how difficult and frustrating it must
be to undertake all of the council regulations and deal with all of the
beaurocracy, however I just dont get where the Christmas is!
Personally I think Christmas has nothing to do with being modern or tasteful,
it has to do with iconic shapes and colours -none of which are evident within
Headington. Christmas also is majorly about children and the excitement it
gives them-plain LED's at the top of lamp posts aint gonna do that Im afraid...
Its a shame that the council are not as supportive as it sounds, particularly
as the vast amount of tourists pass through Headington to get to Oxford, but a
cheap and cheerful christmas display surely cant cost THAT much can it?

What I am confused by is this. In past years we had some quite reasonable
'Christmassy' lights. They were modest but were built up year by year into a
collection which appeared on the Headington lampposts.
Where did they go? Who has them and why were they not brought forward to this
year's display?

Having recently moved from Kings Heath in Birmingham where they have very
simple real Christmas trees attached to each lamp post at floor level with very
simple yet effective red ribbon tied on the branches i am very disappointed
with the Christmas lights in Headington. What a shame they can't be more
Christmasy. I walk to work everyday and i didn't notice them until someone
pointed them out to me. Headington is the main road to drive through which
leads to one of the most beautiful cities in the world, shame it can't grab the
excitement which all visitors might be feeling. However i am very happy in
Headington and there are lots of positives which i shall also write about in
other topics in this forum.

Just to let you know; some of the "dated", "old" and "garish" 'CHRISTMAS
LIGHTS' have now been put to very good use. They decorate the 'Talbot' pub in
Eynsham - with the landlord receiving many complementary reviews from visitors
and locals alike. Why not pop over and spend some money with him!

Why were they sold - and did the money for them go towards the new ones?
Christmas is an old, dated and garish institution after all......

Just wondered, are there any plans for xmas lights in Headington this Xmas? It
would be nice to have a tree covered in lights in Bury Knowle Park.
would be nice to have a tree covered in lights in Bury Knowle Park.
The Headington Christmas lights are always a problem, as private funding has to
be obtained, and they are far more expensive than you would imagine. And twice
in recent years the large Christmas tree donated by Andrew's and propped up
outside Barclays has blown down, which is potentially very dangerous because of
the cables.
Getting electricity to a tree in Bury Knowle Park might be difficult, but it's
a nice idea.
