town halls yesterday in their campaigns for the Minnesota 5th District
Representative. Omar, in discussing the failed Amendment # 2, said. “The
intention of the amendment was simply to create a department that works to
protect everyone’s safety.” She said that even though the amendment failed it
is happening anyway.” She is referring to the name of the new department that
is to be headed by Dr. Cedric Alexander, the new Community Safety Commissioner.
That department, when it is created, may have a name similar to the name put
forward by those who supported Amendment # 2, “The Department of Public
Safety.” 220805_1808.wav
It will incorporate, Minneapolis Police, Fire, 911, and emergency management.
That department has not yet been created and it is not clear if they have
chosen a name for the department. If they have the operator at 311 for City
information did not know what it was when I called her today and I could not
find it on the Citie’s website.
The name of the new department, however, is not the important issue. One of the
main objectives, if not the main objective of the Charter amendment # 2 was to
remove the requirement to have a certain number of police officers, depending
on the cities population. That would have allowed the MPD to be defunded and
dismantled.
This new department, whatever its name, is not going to accomplish that
objective, making it possible to defund or dismantle the MPD beyond the
requirement written into the Charter. Omar, like others who supported the
change, but ended up on the losing end of the vote, is now backpedaling
furiously and falsely claiming she got what she asked for. The required number
of police officers, based on the city's current population is 731.
The “Defund the Police” demand, which started in Minneapolis Powderhorn park,
and which was supported by nine Minneapolis City Council Members, including Cam
Gordon, became a national embarrassment and allowed for Republican victories
around the country, where Democrats should have won.
According to Fox News, Don Samuels, and seven other Minneapolis residents,
brought a lawsuit demanding that the city hire another 110 officers above the
621 officers, who were on the force in late May, to meet the requirements of
the charter. The city reached a low of 614 officers in early May 2022, down
from over 900 officers in early 2020.
