Oh that's a possum alright. Pretty cool. I wonder if that's what's been driving
my wirehair nuts? The possum is the only marsupial in N. America. Neat, eh?
Fairly new the region...I blame global warming.

Me and my son seen one on Cedar Avenue about 2 weeks ago. Originally we thought
it was a big sewer rat, but as we drove past, realized it was a possum.

Yes, we noticed one crossing Minnehaha Creek near 55 last February. After
hiking over there we saw tracks all over the place. They say you can tell the
opposums from Minnesota as they have black tips to their ears from frostbite,
they aren't used to the cold but are staying further and further north. They
are one of the most adaptable animals, living in other animals' old burrows
(they don't build their own or do anything they don't absolutely need to). They
have a simple nervous and digestive systems and can eat pretty much anything.
The young stay in the pouch until they're quite large and later hang on to the
fur on mother's back, sometimes 20 in a brood! Talk about clingy kids!
Oh, and they would often rather play dead than run (or play "possum" as the
phrase goes). The good actors expose their gums and can exude a stench that
makes their would be attacker think they are rotted meat.
And you can see they are mostly nocturnal, except when they're not:

Here's a baby we found at Wood Lake Nature Center last year. It had crawled
into the trash can scavaging and couldn't climb back out. It was playing dead
but wasn't very good at it.
Note the full set of teeth, ear burn, and "finger nails".
