Joint Physical Custody Legislation - CAN'T DO IT WITHOUT
YOUR HELP: For more than 8 years there has been bills at
the legislature to try get a presumption of Joint Physical
Custody, so both fit parents have equal time, access, and
authority with their kids after divorce and when
unmarried. The bills remain alive because people like you
continue to badger their legislators over and over and
tell them the bias against fit loving responsible fathers
in family court must stop because KIDS NEED BOTH PARENTS.
This past spring, we had a good turnout at the legislature
for the hearing in the House on this JPC bill. Our bill
authors did alot - thanks to Sen Kathy Saltzman and Rep
Tim Mahoney. Our heavy handed opponents (mostly domestic
violence industry, bar association, judges, and department
of human services) were able to BLOCK the bill once again,
with many lies and innuendo meant to cause fear and doubt.
The efforts of our opponents convinced the legislature to
re-route their action and replace the bill with a study -
to "study the impact of joint physical custody" before
they passed such a bill. The legislature passed a study
bill, telling the state court administrator to hold a
Joint Physical Custody Study Group.
This fall there will be FOUR MEETINGS where a select group
of 12 people will "study" the impact of JPC. These
meetings are OPEN TO THE PUBLIC and we need as many people
to show up as possible. If you can take a vacation day, it
would be important to show up and observe the meeting
inside, or show up and hold a (friendly) protest/rally
outside the building. The key is JUST SHOW UP!!! We can't
just TELL THEM dads want to be involved, we have to SHOW
THEM dads want to be involved.
CPR's Founder, Molly K Olson, has been selected to be on
this JPC Study Group. However, she is out-numbered and
can't do this alone. As far as we can tell now, CPR is the
only advocate on this Study Group who is boldly in favor
of JPC - most all others in the group are domestic
violence advocates fighting strongly against JPC, or other
government workers from organizations who have opposed
JPC.
