Subject: Karl's English Memorial

Dear All,
I just thought I'd tell you that we had an English Memorial Meeting for Karl
today, on a blustering, pretty autumnal day with clouds and some sun, and quite
a strong wind. About thirty people gathered at the Quaker Meeting House, a
combination of Quakers from this area and penfriends of Karl's from further
afield. A couple from Meeting played a violin and piano duet of English tunes,
and we had about an hour's worship during which people read poems and parts of
letters written by Karl, or memories of helpful and amusing things he had
written to them. There were tears and laughter, and the indoor part of the
meeting ended with the playing of the Paul McCartney's 'Let it Be' on CD. Then
we went out to the tree that was planted on the night of 11th June in Karl's
memory, and the ashes Malika had sent me were scattered around it's base. We
finished with a feast provided by the Quakers.
Afterwards three of us who had written to Karl for a while (Ruth was the
veteran, she had written for ten years) went for a walk along by the river and
talked about Karl and all he had meant to us. It was a good day, although not
easy. Those of us who had been writing for a while still miss Karl, and
realistically we have to recognise that we will, on and off, for a while. We
send our love and thoughts to Karl's family and other friends, who also live
their lives with a hollow ache for what we have lost. Karl, of course, is
absolutely fine now!
Lots of love
Maggie
PS. Malika or Rosie, please will you show this to Muina too?
