I happened upon a unexpected sight this morning on my way home. 27th Street
was blocked by a 1925, historic, John Alden-designed, 44’ schooner being very,
very carefully backed into a warehouse there - with two inches to spare on each
side. After the semi driver successfully inched the schooler and trailer
through the garage door there was well-deserved applause from the onlookers.
This schooner, the “Sagamore”, is a very historic design and it was being
almost completely rebuilt by Peter Barr. From the outside you can see all new
planking, the original mast and some of the lines and other gear. Presumably
the schooner rebuild will be finished in its new location. I have attached two
photos I took this morning. All of this is to say that there never seems to be
a dull day in Seward neighborhood! I suppose the next project, after the
rebuild is completed, is a canal from the schooner’s current location on 27th
Street down to the gorge so it can follow the Mississippi down to the Gulf.
