Friends and Colleagues,
The approaching holiday season is a time of tradition and a time of need.
It is my pleasure to invite you to share in a holiday tradition and address
hunger issues in our community. First, the tradition . . .
Since 1997 I have published an annual holiday story about the fictional
Bartholomew Family in the Villager newspaper, which serves the southwestern
part of St. Paul as well as portions of South Minneapolis and Mendota
Heights. This year's story, entitled "A Family Christmas," will be
published in the December 3 issue of the Villager.
And now the need . . . Demand at food shelves is up as our economy goes into
the tank, and food shelf managers are deeply concerned that donations will
be down this year. Since 2004 I have organized a reading of the Villager
story to benefit an area food shelf. Between 2004 and 2007, we have
provided an estimated 10,000 meals to area food shelves.
For the second year in a row, I am reading to benefit the Department of
Indian Works (DIW) food shelf, which is affiliated with the St. Paul Area
Council of Churches.
When: December 4, 2008
Where: St. Paul Area Council of Churches chapel, 1671 Summit Ave. (two
blocks west of Snelling Ave.)
Time: The reading begins at 7:00 p.m.
Mark you calendars now so you can attend.
Please bring nonperishable food items . . . or . . . write a check at the
event. With cash, food shelf managers are able to buy in bulk and strech
your donation further.
There will be a limited chapbook edition of "A Family Christmas" as a
premium for cash or check donations of $20 or more, with 100 percent of the
proceeds going to DIW's food shelf. While they last, copies of last year's
story "The Best Christmas Gift" will also be on sale, as will copies of my
1993 novel The Treasure Hunt, based on the St. Paul Winter Carnival and
Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt. Again, 100 percent of the proceeds go to the
food shelf.
And, finally, come early (any time after 5 p.m.) to enjoy Indian crafts and
food items on sale with proceeds going to the food shelf. Share this flyer
with others. Bring your friends and your generosity.
Peace to you in this holiday season.
Roger Barr
