You have a couple of quick options, described at the bottom of each post
to the forum: to leave the forum or just get a single daily message
containing all posts to the forum, send an email to:
<email obscured> with "unsubscribe" or "digest
on", respectively, in the subject line.
If you need any help, just let me know.
Cheers, Andrew.

You gotta just love the desperation of the blogger
Kevin says
"please God remove me from the blog"
and its because this blog is well so green and boring
I would say, do you think?

I'm almost at the same point. Is there any way of having separate forums or
sub-forums so that we can subscribe to the areas we're interested in or
unsubscribe from those we aren't? The majority of the correspondence seems
to be on the cannabis issue which is just not an area of interest to me, but
I don't want to miss out on other local news, events and discussion.
Of course, everyone has a right to discuss the issues of relevance to them,
it's just a shame that the rest have to have their inboxes clogged in the
proces :(

The best way to keep the forum relevant is for everyone to stick to the
guidelines and for the guidelines to be effectively enforced by the
forum manager (me). I must admit I haven't been as effective at
enforcing the guidelines as I could have been, and that is going to
change shortly.
Also, while there has been a lot of discussion on cannabis lately, it
seems to be at least achieving more of a local focus and if it's local
(to Canterbury) then it has a place on this forum. If people stick to
the convention (which I think may have to become a guideline soon) of
having relevant subject lines for posts to the forum, it would make life
a lot easier for readers when deciding whether or not a post is of
interest to them.
Thanks again for the feedback, Kelly. This forum stands or falls on the
Forum Manager enforcing the guidelines, and I need to know if I haven't
been doing it as well as I could have ! :-)
Cheers, Andrew.

I'd have to agree that this forum is not exactly shaking me up with big
local issues.
I sort of hoped there would be some griping about specific initiatives of
the Councils (any of the Councils or their constituent parts, their plans,
actions and lack of them and their staff). I also hoped to hear more real
community issues - gardens, safety, quality of life stuff, ideas for making
Christchurch a better city to grow up and grow old in.
Where's the passion for the place?
There must be bigger fish to fry than whether pot should be legal. What
about that "art in public places" program that the City Council has
promoted? Why isn't that money going to local Christchurch artists?
What about all the news concerning the state of the rivers? The Council
comments were all "Its not so bad" while the community seemed to be outraged
at how bad it actually is.
And does anyone else feel that the state of traffic flow is deteriorating?
We are actually developing congestion.
I'm still shocked at the City Council purchasing all that property using
what appeared to be a very arbitrary process.
And driving in to the airport has become one of the least convenient
processes I regularly do. Whoever is behind that should get their butt
kicked.
And I'm more than a little concerned at all the punk jerks and violence in
downtown Christchurch on the weekends. What is happening to the inner city
on Friday and Saturday nights? It is not the Christchurch I thought I knew.

Hi Phil et al,
Good point - is it Canterbury Issues or personal hobby-horses?
Check out the Halswell Booze Warehouse thread. We're trying to get a new
liquor shop stopped - beer, wine, spirits and (of course) plenty of alcopops
for the kids. 40+ letters of objection, over 400 have signed our petition.
I'm both election campaigning for the Greens and on this as well - it's
about community. Lianne Dalziel supports us - if the Bill she and George
Hawkins have in Parliament was law then we could stop it. As it is we have
law (the Sale of Liquor Act 1989) that is based on an ideology of
de-regulation, the market will provide and profit counts more than people (I
thought it was a Tory Act but it was passed under a Labour government!).
Social engineering on a massive scale. It drives home the point that
National/Labour is just pepsi/coke.
I've had just 1 (one) response.
Cheers.

thanks for doing a good job as moderator, Andrew.
"wheres the passion for the place?"
Phil, Kelly, Tom (& others?) -i am sorry i bored you with stirring up cannabis
connections again this week - if it makes you feel any better, i have 579
unread messages in my canterbury issues folder!
We all have our own areas of interests, alot of those on the forum are not
mine, just as cannabis law reform is evidently not yours...nevertheless i would
not doubt the motivation of anyone to want to improve our community, and think
it is sad that this can be implied as 'personal hobby horses'
So at this point you can stop reading if not interested in Justice, Heritage,
or TEACHING YOUR CHILDREN WELL!
All i can say is 'weed' may not directly be an issue for you, but its like
'Apartheid' for a good many other people in the community, and that division is
all for nothing, because prohibition does not work...instead of reducing harm,
it produces it.
and that we ought to be concerned about a regime making our community
fundamentally unsafe (black market and youth crime, alienation and anger).
the issue will not go away until there is some leadership. We dont get it from
the elected representatives, and bureaucracy, so we have to try and lead
ourselves...

Hi Kevin
I'm not complaining about the weedy posts per se. It was the lack of bigger
issues I can easily connect with. I tried to respond on the weed issue with
my own views. But its really not a big issue for me. What got me is that
from where I sit there appear to be a lot of issues in Christchurch and its
neighbourhood that appear to be below the radar.
Here are some from the ECan website:
a.. Water Availability - Community Meetings: 4-7 November 2008
b.. Latest ECan Fast Facts Newsletter - 24 October 2008 now available
c.. Central Plains Water Hearings
d.. NRRP Variation 1 Hearings
e.. 2008 Council Meeting Schedule
f.. Christchurch Southern Motorway Resource Consent Application
And CCC:
a.. Annual Report 2008
b.. Season of Cycling 2008
c.. NZ Cup and Show Week 2008
d.. Ferrymead Bridge Lifeline Project
e.. Central City property purchases
f.. South West Area Plan
g.. Neighbourhood Week 2008
I guess I thought there might be comments and networking on some of these
topics or things that should be on these lists but is not.
I think the local community issues such as the liquor outlet fight is
important and interesting. The issue of establishing community standards
for activities that are not prohibited is interesting to me because we have
freedoms and rights on both sides of the issue. Part of the issue is also
the indirect nature of the outcome sought: to reduce the occurrence of
drunk louts by restricting the activity of a business. Its not actually the
sale of the alcohol that causes the problem; its the misuse of it by the
irresponsible patron. Legitimate and acceptable uses of the products is
also restricted by the approach of blocking the business. But I can accept
that the most practical means of achieving the desired outcome might be to
block the business.
Phil
