What are the differences between a consignment shop and pawn shop? I thought a
pawn shop gave you money on the spot and a consignment shop tried to sell your
items for a set period of time then if the items weren't sold you picked them
up or they were donated to charity. I consign clothing at Turnstyle in
Roseville. Turnstyle pays you a check for the clothing sold. The pricing is
tiered by percentages according to how long items have been for sale. The shop
takes 1/2 you get 1/2. But you don't get cash upfront and you might not sell
anything. I have also sold children's clothing and furniture at Once upon a
Child in Roseville. Once Upon A Child pays a very small amount of cash for
items upfront, then sells them for whatever they choose. I also have sold items
at Play it Again Sports. Where they pay up front. Ten of course there are
antique dealers. But there must be a difference between these places and "Pawn
Shops." One of the reasons I am against "Pawn
shops" is that they are usually very garish looking as in signage etc. The
Pawn America in Brooklyn Park is an eye sore. Also, at the places I mentioned
above, you need to give your name, address, phone and establish an account. Is
that required at pawn shops? I also thought weapons could be sold to pawn shops
such as Buck Knives etc. My perception that it is a way to get cash quick
period. Impulse selling to get cash quick. What types of situations require
that? Think about it. It would be really important to know if personal
information was taken at pawn shops. What about the kid who steals from home
and sells them at a pawn shop to get quick cash for you name it. Pawn shops
have a reputation for a reason. The other places mentioned above require some
waiting time and the items for sale aren't big ticket items. We also have a
variety of charities who count on donations of items that may normally be sold
at a pawn shop or consignment shops. Do they cut
into the success of places like the Goodwill. All of these places work with
pre-owned merchandise. There must be something different about pawn shops for
them to get the reputation they have. Thanks for the opportunity to talk about
this. Karen
