On Thursday night (or Friday early morning) we had our car window broken. I
believe this was the night the shooting took place. This was a separate
incident.
I don't know about you, but it sure seems that this area had been getting
worse. I understand that school has started and as a result I expect a
little disruption,
I am curious as to what you all think is the cause of this and what we can
do to stop it.

Our car was broken into back in early August. Smashed in the back window in our
alley driveway. It was a night and we didn't hear it b/c we had the fan going.
We live on the 4300 block of 29th Ave. We think it was a kid or someone who
doesn't know the value of stolen things b/c they only took our aftermarket
Sirius satelite radio device which is probably worth 5 bucks and you need to
have the subscription to even make it work. They didn't even take the several
dollars worth of change tucked in the little compartment on the dash. Now we
leave our car unlocked and park in the street.
I too am interested in knowing the statistics, esp any trends that are
occurring in crime in StanEric. I think I read on the listserv that Sue
Roethele of MPD CCP/SAFE is producing a crime report map for our precinct. If
anyone knows about that will you please post a link. Thanks.

Can someone please send more information about the "shooting" referenced in
the first email below?
This is the first my wife and I have heard about it and we are very
concerned.

I also wanted to see the statistics. So I went out to
http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/police/crime-statistics/codefor/statistics.asp
to check some numbers. I don't have time for serious number crunching,
but I decided to poke at Standish and Ericsson numbers for Jan-Jun 2007
vs Jan-Jun 2008.
Total crimes:
1st half 2007 1st half 2008
145 131 -Standish
70 62 -Ericsson
(these were the numbers that were easiest to quickly compare without
going through the reports and compiling numbers together. I'll leave
that to someone who is better at fancy Excel work than I am.)
The important thing to keep in mind, in my opinion, is that "the plural
of anecdote is not data." I suspect that a large portion of the
awareness of local crimes is the increased knowledge of what is
happening - due, for example, to the fact that these reports are showing
up in my email box every day.
For example, some years ago my dad's car was broken into and taken on a
joy ride that ended in a police chase. My impression of that was that
it was an isolated incident - the first real crime we had encountered in
the neighborhood. However, if that same thing occurred today, I'd
probably interpret it as part of the rising crime wave, even though it
looks as though crime is either steady or slightly decreasing.

The SENA office requested and received the following from Mpls Police Dept
Crime Prevention Specialist Karen Notsch:
Here is the public info on the shots fired on 9/25/08 that occurred at 4:23 pm
Officers responded to a shots fired call. Suspects and victims were GOA when
the officers arrived. The victims were located at 42nd St & 27th Ave So.
Their vehicle was hit with rounds from a shot gun but no one was injured.
Victims were subsequently located and were charged with other offenses.
The victims were not from the area and it appears the location where the
shooting occurred was random. Because the squads found the vehicle right away
and had to spend time looking for the victims, the squad did not get back to
your area for awhile. Victim's car had small amount of marijuana in it so the
victims were charged with that and also one had a warrant. Officers must have
gotten out of the car eventually in your area because there is witness info
from the area.
AND - from CPS Sue Roethele regarding a crash incident on 38th:
Crash Thursday night about 4 a.m.---CNN 08 294 286: 2241 38th St. E. at 4:39
a.m. 9/26, Police responded to a Property Damage Hit and Run call at this
address. A black SUV hit the building and left the scene. Entire front of the
business (Calson, Bloemendaal, Rollie Ltd., an accounting firm) appeared to be
destroyed and the suspect vehicle was gone. Vehicle may have been a newer model
Ford Explorer, no LP information.

We around 43rd and Nokomis and have had our car stolen twice. (honda
civic-apparently the worst car to have for theft). It seems that burglary and
break ins are in fact on the rise.
Also, I have had some other strange things happen. I get home late at night,
and twice I have had suspicious people hanging around. Once it was a passerby
on a motorcycle. I went into the house quickly and he walked over to my car
and walked around it and looked into it. The second time it was somebody
walking by on the sidewalk. He crossed the street and started walking towards
me. I quickly went into the house and he turned back around and walked the
other direction once I was inside.
Has this type of thing happened to anybody else? I feel paranoid! I am a
young woman coming home late at night and I feel like this type of thing has
been happening a lot lately. Anybody having problems with people lurking?
