I'm going to suggest that we "officially" launch this new forum with Introductions. This will give folks a chance to see who is a part of the forum and "test" the software a bit to see how it works. To see a list of subscribers: http://forums.e-democracy.org/knowle-west/groups/kw-forum/members To submit an introduction, just send it in an email to: <email obscured>
I shall be the first local to introduce myself, then...
My name is David Shoare, the list of things I do and have done is very long as
many will know, so I'll keep it brief:
-I'm a first year student at University of the West of England studying
Politics
-I'm a member of the UPG, the steering group of the Urban 2 Programme
-I've been involved in the Knowle West Youth Forum for many years, and
currently chair it's management committee
-I'm a board member of Knowle West Development Trust
Err... That about sums up most of what I do, I've also done a couple things at
the Media Centre including being part of appointing the architects for
Archimedia. It's so hard to just put down everyting you do into one piece of
text!
Hope to see this forum turn into a good, popular place for everyone to discuss
things.
Hi, My name is Mandy Shute, I am a city council employee working in Knowle
West. My grand title is Neighbourhood Manager, more like the neighbourhood
manages me!!! My "job" is to work closely with all of the local providers, have
an overview of local provision and keep residents informed of what is going on.
My next big task is to work with the local community to set up a community
partnership, hopefully one similar to the Hartcliffe and Withywood Partnership,
this will allow local residents more say in how the neighbourhood is managed.
If anyone out there would like to know more about the community partnership
please send me an e mail or arrnage to come and see me. I am based on the
Filwood Broadway. Isn't this forum great. Bye for now Mandy Shute
Hi my name is Caroline Jenkins
I have just been employed by the local authority and Neighbourhood Renewal as
an Extended Schools Community Coordinator. I will be based at Hengrove School
working with Alison Findlay and Liz Rowbotham but will be lined managed by
Martin Strube (NR education) who is based at the Council House. My role is to
help schools gain access to services which will enable them to meet and deliver
the extended schools core offer for the pupils and families in Knowle West. It
is also part of my role to support service deliverer's access schools more
easily.
The Core offer is
* Access to Quality Childcare - all year round
* A varied menu of activities - including study support
* Parenting Support - including family learning
* Swift and Easy Referral to Specialist Support Services
* Community Access including adult learning
*
I have been working with and supporting work in education in Bristol in various
roles for the last 16 years some paid and some voluntarily.
My role is linked into the Extended School Partnership work currently going on
across the city but my focus is working with a smaller group of schools and
helping to develop better community links.
I am working with specific schools to further develop extended services
provision. The schools are Hengrove Community Arts College, Ilminster Avenue
Primary and Specialist Nursery, Connaught Primary, Greenfield Primary (formally
Novers Lane Infant and Junior), School of Christ the King, Knowle West Early
Years Centre, Footprints Children's Centre, Knowle Park Infant, Knowle Park
Junior, Florence Brown, Perry Court Infants, Perry Court Juniors, Victoria Park
Infants, Victoria Park Juniors, New Oak Primary and New Fosseway Special
School.
The aim of this new role is:
To enhance school and community relationships, multi agency partnership working
and resource sharing by providing a dedicated member of staff to each Extended
School Community (ESC). This is my role as the Coordinator for Knowle West and
Hengrove. ESC's represent a community focussed approach to the high priority
Extended Schools agenda which is targeted at the inclusion and involvement of
parents and the community in managing resources and in delivery of services to
children.
This service is commissioned by the Neighbourhood Renewal Unit to help with
* Raise attendance and attainment in schools
* Improve linkages between schools, communities and families
* Improve educational services to BME families
And generally develop and strengthen partnerships between schools, other
organisations and the local community at a neighbourhood level in order to
improve our children's life chances within NR areas.
I would like to come out and meet with you to discuss my role, carry out an
audit of your current provision in line with the core offer schools are
expected to offer under Extended Schools. This will enable me to map out what
is happening across the area to share with you and other colleagues to see what
other provision is going on in the area and what you might like to tap into to
benefit your core client group.
Please contact me to arrange a time to come and meet you at your convenience my
contact details are below.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hi
I'm Carolyn Hassan Director at Knowle West Media Centre. We do lots of
different media work in the community - such as photography projects, film
and video and design and multimedia work. Check out our website
www.kwmc.co.uk for some examples.
We're always more than happy to show people around and talk about what we do
and how you could get involved.
A great deal of our time is currently being spent developing a new media
centre to be built on the current Leinster House site - it will be a beacon
of environmental design. Young people in the Archimedia Core group have been
part of the design team ensuring we have a building that Knowle West can be
proud of.
We're also keen to see a really good communication network in Knowle West
with organisations working well together and people living in Knowle West
feeling that they can be much more involved in what goes on here. I think
the Issues Forum is a great way of doing this and ask everybody already
involved to encourage more people to sign up.
We're also very involved with supporting Bristol's bid to the Governments
Digital Challenge. See www.connectingbristol.com
At the moment Roz Hall is working with us to try to visit as many people as
possible who might want to contribute ideas about how better connectivity
and community involvement in producing content, and making decisions using
the Internet could really help neighbourhoods like Knowle West.
If anybody would like to contribute ideas please contact myself or Roz.
Bye for now
Hi all,
My name is Carol Hayward and I work in the Council's consultation department. A
lot of the work I've been doing over the last couple of years has been about
trying to encourage more people to come forward and give their views - mainly
through websites such as www.askbristol.com and
www.bristol-city.gov.uk/epetitions
Like Carolyn, I'm also involved in the city's response to the Digital Challenge
through Connecting Bristol.
I don't specifically work or live in Knowle West but I had an involvement in
trying to get this issues forum going so you may hear a little bit more from me
over the next couple of months while I try to help get the discussions going.

Hi,
I'm the Bristol Blogger. I'm currently taking an interest in the Connecting
Bristol initiative and its extraordinary claim that its model of
'e-participation' is a solution to long-term social and economic deprivation.
Quiet in here, innit?
I don't think anyone would claim its the only solution, or that there is one
solution. I think the issue is more that, people living in communities
identified by others as being "deprived" are better able to find solutions if
they have access to information, decision making processes and the opportunity
to participate.
Wonder if your observaion will liven things up.
