Door-to-door foreclosure outreach
http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/node/16382
by Lauretta Dawolo Towns, TC Daily Planet
Teams of volunteers hit the streets of North Minneapolis Monday
evening, knocking on doors to offer help in avoiding the nightmare of
foreclosure. The Northside Community Reinvestment Coalition (NCRC)
and several partners and allies began working on their plan months
ago. The first step was identifying at-risk homes. Volunteers spent
several months combing through mortgage records to identify homes
with adjustable rate mortgages. Now they were ready to contact those
homeowners directly, offering help in dealing with banks and lenders
as their mortgage payments were about to re-set.
Blowing smoke: Is there a movement to recall Dave Thune?
http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/node/16362
by Paul Demko, Minnesota Independent
St. Paul City Council member Dave Thune has long provoked passionate
responses from both his admirers and detractors. He drew the ire of
bar owners by championing a smoking ban (despite his own long-
standing nicotine jones) and initially opposed expanding liquor-
license hours during the Republican National Convention for fear of
puking GOP lobbyists. Thune further annoyed some residents by
participating in protests during the RNC.
Indian princess in Duluth?
http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/node/16339
by Deborah Locke, Fond du Lac News
Early this fall, the Indian Scout and I fell into a conversation
about the City of Duluth-owned stained glass window that the Duluth
mayor wanted to sell to ease the budget deficit. A Duluth artist
created the 115-year-old window called "Minnehaha" that shows an
Indian woman.
VOICES | The miracle on easy street: Top tier accepted tax message
http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/node/16340
by Dane Smith, Growth & Justice • Another big projected state budget
shortfall will soon be revealed to us. And sure as lake ice in
December, there will be solemn declarations that we dare not punish
the successful and that it is simply unacceptable to restore even
modestly higher tax rates on top-income households in Minnesota.

NEWS YOU CAN USE | Recession-proofing the holidays: Plentiful
pumpkins provide holiday cheer
http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/node/16371
by Mary Thoemke, TC Daily Planet
With cash in short supply this year, and plastic not so trendy
anymore, we may have to turn a little more creative in our gift-
giving traditions this holiday season. I remember long ago when my
children were small, and we faced a tough economy in the 1970s. With
many children in school and many teachers to remember at Christmas,
we thought hard about gifts to give them that we could afford. Our
pumpkin crop was plentiful that year and we stumbled on the idea of
cooking up the pumpkins and making pumpkin bread for each of the
teachers.

BOOKS | Hmong Cookbook…a special tribute to an elusive cuisine
http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/node/16205
by Phyllis Louise Harris, Asian Pages
Hmong culture is preserved primarily through story telling, hand sewn
tapestries, family memories, and culinary traditions…and not through
books. It wasn't until 1952 that the written form of Hmong was
developed, so finding a Hmong cookbook is rare indeed. I have seen
two, both out of print, and now this new Hmong Cookbook developed by
the University of Wisconsin Cooperative Extension along with area non-
profits, community participants and the University of Wisconsin-
Stout. Like Hmong culture, it is the result of a truly community effort.
BOOKS | Minnesota Law & Politics founder puts "All Seriousness Aside"
http://tcdailyplanet.net/node/16394
by Dwight Hobbes, TC Daily Planet
"All Seriousness Aside: Stories from the Back Page" is a collection
of essays by William C. White. I got your William C. White. White may
be William on business and formal occasions and when it comes to
cashing checks. The rest of the time, he’s spirited, fun-loving Bill.
Minnesota Law & Politics‘s “All Seriousness Aside” column gives him
an opportunity to reflect on varied aspects of his existence. It’s
warmhearted wisdom, witty as hell.
Northfield's Jon Denison: Dismal as a candidate, but winning fans in
office
http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/node/16304
by Dan Sugarman, TC Daily Planet
On the morning of November 8, 2006, Jon Denison learned that he had
become Northfield's new city councilor for the 4th Ward. In a close
race that wasn't decided until after he'd gone to sleep, Denison
squeaked past his opponent, Victor Summa, by a mere 49 votes.

FRONT ROW SEAT | St. Paul: Neither thrifty nor hip?
http://tcdailyplanet.net/node/16378
by Jay Gabler • My friend just introduced me to ThriftyHipster.com,
which I suppose as a thrifty hipster who spends even more time online
than the average thrifty hipster I should already have been
acquainted with. I appreciated the site’s easy navigation and unusual
color scheme, but was taken aback to see the second-rate status to
which my hometown is consigned.
