Cedar Riverside Safety Committee signs safety plan
WHAT: Cedar Riverside Safety Committee signs area safety plan agreement
WHEN: Friday June 24, 2011 at 10:30 a.m.
WHERE: Augsburg College Christiansen Center Riverside Room
MORE: For the past four months the Cedar Riverside Safety Committee has been
meeting bi-weekly to develop a safety plan for the neighborhood. This
committee was formed in the wake of a shooting at the Brian Coyle Center this
past winter and ongoing concerns about crime in the area.
The committee, chaired by First Precinct commander Inspector Kris Arneson, is
comprised of representatives from the MPD, the City and County Attorneys
Offices, the Park, U of M and Metro Transit Police Departments, the Brian Coyle
Center, Augsburg College, the local business and Somali communities and the
Mayors Office. The committee has been working together to formulate a plan
that addresses community concerns using resources available from each partner.
Tomorrow morning the representatives from the various partners will be on hand
to sign the non-binding Cedar Riverside Safety Plan. This plan addresses the
three most important issues brought forth by the committee; where to focus
resources, how to use available resources to combat violent crime and how to
have a positive impact on youth in the area.
The plan itself consists of 18 action items that will decrease crime in the
neighborhood, increase peoples perception of safety in the Cedar Riverside area
and build a solid foundation for cooperation between the various partners and
the communities they represent.
Here is a draft of the plan:
