this isn't really a roseville only issue, but i was wondering if anyone had any
thoughts on liquor laws in minnesota.
1) why are liquor stores closed on sundays and are open no later than 10pm? you
can drive a short distance to wisconsin to purchase liquor on sundays and late
at night. does it make any sense that we can not do the same in minnesota? if a
person would like some wine or other alcoholic beverage later at night or on a
sunday, our politicians would rather have you drive to a bar, drink, and then
drive home. doesn't it seem safer for people to drive to a liquor store any day
or time that they want alcohol, and then drink it at home, rather than have to
drink at a bar and drive home after drinking?
2) i think we should be able to consume one 12 oz. can of beer while we are
driving our vehicles. but still keep the .08 limit. let's say you are a
construction worker working outside on a hot, humid august day and you'd like
to have a cold beer after work. currently, most people would stop at a bar
after work and probably not limit themselves to one beer but will consume way
more than they should, and then drive home, possibly drunk. myself, i think it
would be better if they were able to slowly consume one beer as they drove
home. limiting people to only one 12 oz. container in their vehicle would not
get anyone drunk, would stop many people from stopping at a bar on the way
home, and would make many people's home life much better because the worker
would come home to their family at a decent time and in a sober condition.
3) finally, knowing what we all now know about alcohol and about marijuana, if
we could start from scratch, would it be better to have alcohol legal or to
have marijuana legal? what is your opinion? which do you think causes more
problems to individuals, families and society as a whole?
To the first point:Blue Laws are one issue, lobbying
interests of bars etc are another. The question should
be more finely drawn.
To the second point: One-handed driving is chancy.
Drinking from a container not designed for drinking
while in motion is even more chancy, as it pulls the
eyes from the road. Beer through a straw? Overkill.
To the third point: As medicinal use of marijuana is
currently an issue in Minnesota, the question as posed
is a red herring.

Roger, I like your format. It sounds like a conversation between myself and my
husband. I'm usually the one playing "devil's advocate".
1) I guess I really don't have a problem with the liquor store blue laws. I
feel that if it is necessary for me to go out and get liquor outside of their
open times, it's probably not a good reason to drink.
2) I don't think that drinking alcohol while driving should be legalized. I
fear the "lightweight" who gets drunk on one can of beer (and I know people
like this). There's also the issue of weight when it comes to BAC - an 80 lb
woman is going to get a higher BAC than a 150 lb man.
3) The marijuana question is something else entirely. I don't know enough
about it to really make an educated opinion on it, but I do know that more
research needs to be done on the medical uses. I'm not sure about legalizing
it for general usage though.
Although I'm answering these legitimately, I don't know how "tongue in cheek"
your post was. That the problem with the internet I guess...
