Hi,
I'm Tony Brett. I live on Reliance Way, part of the old bus garage
Estate and have a keen interest in using electronic facilities to build
communities. I've done lots with facebook, using it for Neighbourhood
Watch discussions and am experimenting with using Bebo to get local
children involved too (with parental permission, of course!).
I hope we can get lots more people involved in this forum.

Hi,
I'm working with others to launch a local project to reduce our area's carbon
footprint. If we pool our skills, experience and enthusiasm I believe we can
create a model for other small towns, make a huge difference to our immediate
and broader environment and have some fun getting to know each other in the
process. I'm hoping this forum will provide one means of getting people
involved and spreading the word!!

Sometimes it helps to launch a new forum with a round of
introductions, for those who are comfortable. Its an easy way to try
out the forum and gives others in the forum a sense of who is "out
there."
So far, we've heard from Abi and Ian.
My name is Tim Erickson. I don't live in Cowley or even in Oxford,
however I have been there to visit and hope to return sometime very
soon. I work for E-Democracy.Org in St. Paul, Minnesota (USA) and have
been working with Shey Cobley to set up this forum. I've been working
with forums like this for almost 10 years now.
I am very interested in the power of internet to connect people and
facilitate conversations over long distances, but also within local
communities. There are great examples around the UK and in the USA of
local communities using forums like this one to share information,
discuss important issues, and increase participation in the community.
So, who else has subscribed to this forum? And what do you hope to see
discussed in this forum?

Hi to everyone,
I've lived in the Cowley area for the past 26 years, happily married with 5
children and 3 grandchildren. I've also worked for Oxford City Council for the
past 36 years at City Works who are responsible for refuse, recycling, street
cleaning, engineering, motor transport and parks. I'm employed as an
Environmental Development Officer responsible for raising environmental
awareness through education. I believe I have a lot to offer in the way of
support and knowledge, and one of my main goals is to help make the Cowley area
a safer, greener and cleaner place for all.

Hello all
I live in the Florence Park area, with my other half, and have been here for
over 5 years, prior to that I was at the other end of Cowley Road next door to
the Tesco for a couple of years, having first moved to Oxford in 2000. I work
for Oxford University in an admin job. I'd be happy to get involved in
Cowley-based activities. I don't know what I can specifically contribute but am
interested to see what develops... :-)

Hello fellow Forum members,
I have lived just off Cowley Rd for 18 years and love the area. I am a
landlord and acting Chairman of Oxford Small Landlords Association. My
special areas of interest are how to go about protecting tenants from
unscrupulous landlords by using existing legislation, whilst not increasing
levels of homelessness by driving good landlords out of the business by
excessive and punative government and local government control.
My main goal is to keep a roof over everybodys' head.........but I think
that the current trends bode fairly ill for the future.
On the "green" front, I have invested in water "harvesting" and am waiting
to have a "sun-pipe" and solar panel fitted.
Kind regards to you all, Judy Crompton

Hi Gus,
We have met several times, last time when I collected all the bags and
rubbish from the OxClean event. Are you aware that on Sunday 22nd June,
there is the Oxford Mela event taking place at the Cowley Marsh recreation
ground, 10.00 - 6.00. This will attract a huge number of youngsters from the
area as it is aimed at there age group. For further details, I suggest you
go onto the Oxford Mela website.
Don't know about you, but I wish the road humps at the junctions along
Holloway could be removed. These play havoc with peoples back especially
when taking a lefthand turn.
Regards
Malcolm

Hello from me.
I've lived in Temple Cowley for the last 9 years and love living in a street
which is a mixture of owner occupiers, social housing and students/young
professionals in rented accommodation.
I think that forums like this have a lot of potential for engaging people in
their local communities: although I'm concerned that they risk becoming the
preserve of a small number of enthusiasts and, by their very nature, exclude
people who are on the wrong side of the digital divide.
The first thing is publicity: I'm going to stick notes through my neighbour's
doors, contact the local resident's association and email friends in the area.
