Downtown's population sees steady growth
By Michelle Bruch
Downtown’s population continues to climb a little each year, and now we have
about 34,140 residents, according to Maxfield Research.
That’s nearly 30 percent higher than the number of Downtown residents in 2000,
and it’s larger than recent downtown population estimates in Denver and San
Diego.

Everyone together now: Forget guns, drugs and violence. This is hip-hop.
By Cristof Traudes
The future site of the Minnesota Shubert Center literally shook the core of
Downtown for its first-ever Groundbreaker Battle, a six-hour event to teach the
public about the culture of hip-hop. It wasn’t “I got shot nine times” 50 Cent
— this was an education on hip-hop’s history and its all-invited attitude.
All were there.
The hundreds that made up the audience wore baggy pants and designer jeans,
dirty old Converses and sleek boots, $10 do-rags and $100 hairdos, oversized
Vikings sweatshirts and pinstriped suit jackets. But it seemed everyone wore
the same smile.

Sympathy and concern mix in memorial ride
By Dylan Thomas
On another day, the near-perfect fall weather — cool temperatures and a
cloudless, blue sky — might have been excuse enough for a long bicycle ride.
Instead, the group of nearly 300 that rode from St. Paul to Minneapolis Oct. 11
did so in honor of four bicyclists killed in crashes in September on metro-area
streets. The number of deaths, coming so close together, was especially
worrisome to regular bike commuters like Melissa Summers.
