weeks, and as you can imagine this gives us several important things to
discuss. Although this forum is not designed to discuss national issues (and
thus we ask you to please refrain from discussing the presidential campaign
here), we believe that the forum is the perfect venue to hold in-depth
conversations about the state and local issues that will be on the ballot on
November 4th. Please remember that one of the rules of the forum is to avoid
talking directly about individuals, and with that in mind we would like to keep
discussions about the upcoming elections focused on issues rather than
individual state or local candidates. While debates about candidates are
critical, this is not the proper place to have those discussions, and we
appreciate your understanding of the need to keep our discussions
issue-oriented.
To begin, we are including a link to the League of Women Voters Guide to the
election- http://www.lwvohio.org/pdf/FINAL%20VOTER%20GUIDE%202008%2010.7.08.pdf
The first section of this guide provides a great deal of useful information
about the state-wide issues on the ballot (including arguments for and against
each initiative), and we suggest looking at the information contained in the
guide as a useful starting point for our discussions.
Issues #6 (the proposal to authorize a new casino in Ohio) has received a great
deal of attention on the airwaves in recent weeks, and we will begin our
election discussion here. What are the most compelling arguments for and
against Issue #6 that you've come across, and why do you believe that this bill
should or should not be supported? Do you have any additional information
about the issue that would benefit the rest of the forum community?
Although we're starting with this particular issue, feel free to start a new
topic thread about any of the other state or local issues on the ballot. It's
during times like these that forums such as CORIF are able to provide a
particularly valuable service to the community as a space for open, honest, and
respectful dialogue about the critical issues to be decided upon in an
election, and we hope that you all will take advantage of this opportunity to
share your thoughts with each other.
Finally, please do not forget to post a brief introduction about yourself to
the forum if you're new; or if you've been with us for awhile, please feel free
to update your pre-existing intro with any new information that you would like
to share with us.
Thanks and we hope that you all have a wonderful weekend.
Your forum managers,
Josh and Liz
