to two, with one Council Member, Andrew Johnson absent, voted to give a $7000
bonus to all police supervisors. Robin Wonsley and Aisha Chughtai voted against
the measure. The rank and file had been approved for similar bonuses last
March.
Why would many of the same Council Members who voted to defund the police on
June 7, 2000, now vote for these large bonuses? The reason is that following
the call to defund the police, as many predicted, crime went up, especially
violent crimes, including murders. The crime rate began to climb as more and
more police officers left the department. Many filed for medical leaves for
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), mostly as a result of the George Floyd
riots, which included the burning of the Third Precinct building.
In addition to the riots and the resulting PTSD, many of the officers did not
feel supported by the city leaders, such as the City Council, the Mayor, and
the Police Chief. They also did not feel supported by much of the press and
parts of the Minneapolis population either. Many then became demoralized.
There were organizations like Black Lives Matter (BLM), Communities United
against Police Brutality, (CUAPB), and Justice for Jamar Clark, which spread
the false narrative that the Police Department was largely racist and
excessively violent, especially toward people of color. They implied that
nationally, thousands of African Americans were being unjustly killed by racist
white police officers. Even the Mayor, Jacob Frey said âBeing Black in America
should not be a death sentence,â following the death of George Floyd, implying
that Floyd was killed because of his race.
But, according to the Washington Post, Fatal Force Data Base, about 15 Africans
are unjustly killed by law enforcement each year. A South Minneapolis
newspaper, accused without evidence, the head of the police federation, Bob
Kroll, of being the leader of a white supremacist motorcycle gang. That paper
then accused all of the members of the Police Federation, who voted for Kroll,
of racism.
Partly as a result of that false narrative, a large demonstration took place
outside of Krollâs house in Hugo MN. While at that demonstration John Thompson,
who would become a State Representative, threatened among other things, to burn
the town of Hugo. He then beat effigies of Kroll, and his wife, Liz Collins,
who had been an anchor and a reporter for WCCO TV. Kroll has since resigned
from his position as a union leader, and Collins is no longer with WCCO.
The same paper that claimed that Kroll was the leader of the white supremacist
motorcycle Gang also cherry-picked data from the twenty most dangerous jobs out
of 800 job categories, to try to show, by comparison, that police work was not
dangerous.
It also implied that the Jamar Clark shooting was unjust and that it needed
another hearing, despite the fact that the Justice Department, under an African
American Attorney General, and under an African American (Obama)
administration, found the shooting to be justified.
The results were predictable and were predicted. Police officers left, and
crime went up. Way up. On top of all that, the three officers who were with
Derick Chauvin, when George Floyd died, were prosecuted for aiding and abetting
Floydâs murder, even though two of them were still in training during the
incident. That included Thomas Lane who had taken several measures, including
CPR, to save Floydâs life during the incident.
Kim Potter, a police officer from Brooklyn Center, was also charged and
convicted of manslaughter in the shooting death of Daunte Wright when she
mistook her sidearm for a taser. Both of these cases were prosecuted by the
Attorney General, Kieth Ellison. Ellison up charged Potter from what the county
prosecutor recommended, to first-degree manslaughter, for which she was
convicted. She is doing two years in prison as a result.
Ellison also spoke in favor of Minneapolis Charter Amendment # 2, which,
despite Ellisonâs statements to the contrary, would have completely dismantled
the MPD. In the language from the charter amendment, it would âreplace the
Minneapolis Police Department with a Department of Public Safety (DPS).â The
DPS could have, âif needed, âbut would not be required to have any police
officers.

That lack of support from the state AG, demonstrated to police officers a lack
of support for the police from state officials as well, which in addition to
the State Attorney General, also included many members of the State
Legislature, including the members of the BIPOC caucus.

Why would any highly qualified person, in their right mind apply to be a police
officer in Minneapolis? Answer: A $7000 retention bonus. Who is going to pay
for the bonuses, not to mention the Third Precinct Building and all of the
city-owned property that was destroyed during the riots? You are if you pay
taxes in Minneapolis or Minnesota. Who is going to pay with their lives for the
increased murders in Minneapolis as law and order have broken down as a result
of this false woke narrative? All of the residents of Minneapolis, as well as
those employed in the city, or who just visit, but mostly African Americans and
especially poor African Americans in North and South Minneapolis are being shot
dead in record numbers.
Note: $7000 X 731 officers = $ 5,117,000: The price for the lack of
appreciation shown toward Minneapolis police officers. This doesnât include the
hundreds of Minneapolis residents, people who work or just visit the city, who
are killed, and the thousands shot and otherwise injured by shooting and other
violent crimes since the George Floyd riots and the calls to defund and
dismantle the police.
