New Hiawatha wading pool will make a splash next summer
Design approved by MPRB Board of Commissioners
By next summer, visitors to Lake Hiawatha Park in south Minneapolis will be
able to splash around a new wading pool. The Minneapolis Park and Recreation
Board (MPRB), at its June 16 meeting, approved the schematic for the new water
feature.
The new design includes ground geysers, whimsical Blue Heron and cattail sprays
reflecting the wetland theme, benches and shade structures. The project will be
bid this summer, construction will begin this fall, and the new pool is
scheduled to open in summer 2011. Funding for the wading pool is $425,000 from
City Net Debt Bonds; staff hopes to complete all the improvements within the
budget, which will be determined when bids are obtained.
The wading pool will be constructed on the existing site, just east of the park
center building. Its location is favorable as it is within site surveillance of
the park directorโs office, close to the handicapped accessible bathroom and
surrounded by mature canopy shade trees.
The existing 1950โs-era pool was closed to the public at the end of summer 2008
due to structural deterioration and the high cost of maintaining the pool.
Substantial improvements required to operate the pool were cost-prohibitive. In
addition, a 2007 evaluation of the wading pool recommended replacement.
Two neighborhood meetings and a public hearing confirmed public support for the
replacement and upgrade of the wading pool.
Renovation of Lake Hiawatha Park has been ongoing since 2006, including a
completely renovated recreation center, beach improvements, shoreline
restoration and landscaping. The park features a playground with a climbing
wall for children, tennis courts, athletic fields, a fishing dock and outdoor
basketball court.
