Over the weekend we saw someone drive up to the British Heart Foundation shop
and take the bags of goods that had been left outside while the shop was
closed. She then drove off in a hurry. I phoned the shop on Monday who said
that no staff had picked them up, and then reported the incident to the police
- I'd taken the car's registration number so they said they would follow it up.
It seems very low to knick from charity shops, and probably goes on all the
time. The moral of the tale is that it is not a good idea to leave bags outside
the shops when they are closed; and maybe keeping an eye open for such
activities could be useful.

I have noticed that this and other charity shops leave their discarded items
outside on the pavement for collection, so the person in question may only have
been taking their rubbish. I have seen items such as a marble chopping board, a
lampshade and quite a lot of CDs and videos in their rubbish, so if people want
to take such stuff, could it not be regarded as a form of freecycling, rather
than of stealing?

There's another side to this. The bags left outside charity shops are
often raided and the contents left lying about. Perversely, I'm much
happier if a thief takes the whole bag rather than opening it outside the
shop and strewing everything around....
The real troublemakers are people who dump bags of junk when the shop is
closed. This is equivalent to 'fly tipping', ought to be reported when
observed and is one of the 'menaces' of charity shops. We have so many
that it gives a third-world appearance to the area at the weekend.
Actually, that's unfair - in the Third World, they'd use and recycle
everything and leave it tidy again. It's us in the West who are so messy
and careless of our streets.

I tend to agree with David Clover that it makes the area look a mess when
bags are ripped open and contents left lying about. Apart from being a
really base thing to do.
If residents are serious about giving to charity shops and are not able to
visit during opening hours perhaps there is another way to ensure the
contents are delivered safely. A simple idea might be to have one large
container sited away from the shop fronts where we can leave our donated
goods out-of-hours; and for the 7 charity shops to take it in turns to
collect the goods for sale.
If the container is deep enough it would also prevent thieves taking their
chances - if they did try there would be more chance someone would see them.

Would large 'post boxes' similar to those used for recycling be an idea??
