A question for you all, stemming from an odd event that occurred last Friday. A
neighbor, whose house fronts on 43rd just above Hiawatha golf course came home
and walked into her tucked-under garage to discover what she described as an
overwhelming "bizarre sweet anti-freeze kind of smell" that immediately gave
her a headache. More than a little freaked, she called Centerpoint; the tech
came by and immediately determined it wasn't gas (and said he'd never
encountered anything like it). When she mentioned it to an acquaintance who's a
contractor he said he'd heard (apocryphally) that sometimes manufacturing
companies dump waste into the storm sewers of Friday -- and her house is
positioned right above one of the big storm outlets that lead into the lake.
The smell dissapated in a few hours and hasn't recurred.
The question: Anyone else ever encountered something like this? Heard of it?
(The address line if for identification purposes only -- I'm not necessarily
trolling for a story for the Strib here.)

My wife and I were enjoying a glass of wine in the backyard of our home at 43rd
and Longfellow (near the NW corner of the golf course) on Friday night when a
strong smell like burning plastic drove us inside. I assumed that someone
nearby or upwind was burning something they shouldn't have, but after scanning
the immediate neighbors' yards without success, I retreated inside. I didn't
think to call the gas company-- it didn't smell like gas to me, though it was a
very powerful and "chemical" smell. This is the only time in the 3 1/2 years
I've lived here that I have experienced a smell like this. Looking back, the
smell was strong enough and wrong enough that I should have notified someone
about it. Thanks for the opportunity to share now, Bob.

We can smell the airport, too, not every day, but more often in the winter when
a good southerly wind kicks up. We're at 43rd St. E. and 20th Ave. S. The sound
protection zone ends a block or so to the south of us.
Close enough to smell the airport. Too far for noise abatement.
Maybe that could be our block's motto?
