Hello and welcome to the Central Ohio Regional Issues Forum! My name is Joshua
Wiener, and I will be serving as one of the co-managers of this forum. I am
quite excited about launching this new online space to discuss the issues that
matter most to the residents of Central Ohio, and I look forward to working
with you all in the effort to build a deeper sense of regional unity and
community.
To help facilitate healthy discussion we would like to begin by conducting a
round of introductions so that forum participants can learn about each other
and learn about the issues that matter most to you. I will start by providing
a sample of the type of introduction we hope you will post to the new forum,
and we hope that you will take this opportunity to start participating right
away.
Just to give you a brief background about myself, I am a second year graduate
student at The Ohio State University. I am currently working on dual Masters
Degrees in Public Administration and Natural Resources at the John Glenn School
of Public Affairs and the School of Environment and Natural Resources. My
research interests center on environmental policy and energy issues, and my
thesis is going to focus on Distributed Energy Generation. I was born and
raised in California but have lived in Columbus for the past three years and
consider Central Ohio home. I have greatly enjoyed getting to know the new
community I live in, and I look forward to learning even more about the region
through my interactions with all of you in the forum.
As co-manager of the forum my goal is to keep this space safe and civil for an
open and honest discussion about the issues that matter most to you.
Everyone’s voice has a right to be heard, and this forum represents a unique
new venue in which this can occur. I hope that we are able to use this space
to share insights and solutions to the pressing concerns facing Central Ohio,
and to take advantage of this exciting opportunity to help shape the future of
our region.
In order to post your own introduction please select the "Reply All" function
on your email and tell us about your background, your interests, and any
particular topics or issues that you would like to see us discuss in the coming
weeks.
Thank you all for joining the Central Ohio Regional Issues Forum, and I look
forward to working with you to build this exciting new online community.
Best,
Josh Wiener

Welcome, everyone! Let me begin by introducing myself. I am Liz Ike,
serving as one of the two forum managers on the Central Ohio Regional Issues
Forum. I am a master's student at the Ohio State University pursuing a
degree in City and Regional Planning. I am very excited to be a part of
this forum and look forward to observing and participating in the
discussions that are relevant to the members of this region!
I am a lifelong resident of Central Ohio. I grew up in Grove City and have
lived in Clintonville for the past two years. I have seen tremendous
changes in the area throughout the recent years and anticipate that right
now our regionour communityis on the cusp of an innovative transition. My
work experiences and recreation interests have sent me throughout the
Central Ohio Region and I hope that this forum will allow me to hear the
voices from all corners of the area that I have known only as a visitor.
This 'regional voice' is so important in the change process that has already
begun. Issues like transportation, housing, economic development, etc. are
so relevant to all members of the community, and I believe the discussions
we will share in this forum will help to establish goals and, ultimately,
realize positive change!
If anyone has questions or concerns about the forum as we begin the
discussion, please don't hesitate to contact me!
Best,
Liz Ike

Thanks for getting us going!I'm Peter Shane. This is my fifth year in Columbus
as a member of the law faculty at Ohio State. I grew up and went to school in
the East, but have also lived in places as different as New Orleans,
Pittsburgh, and Iowa City, Iowa. I have loved Columbus, which truly combines
the friendliess I associate with my Iowa years with the amenities of a real
city. Because our one daughter is in her twenties, however, I probably don't
get to see much of the "family activities" side of Columbus life.I am
interested in this forum both because of my interest in the region and my
interest in seeing how online communities develop. (Full disclosure: I helped
get the grant that made CORIF possible and am a volunteer member of the
steering committee.)My top four personal regional questions are these:1. What
can be done to bring back nonstop air service to the West Coast?2. How are we
doing in terms of tourism? We're in a great place to live - how are we to
visit?3. Are there additional partnerships involving Ohio State and education
that can enhance the future of the region?4. Do we have a vibrant "regional
culture" scene? Are we making the most of Ohio's place in American
history?Peter ShaneColumbus, OH

Hello -- My name is Kathleen Murphy and I own an advertising/public
relations business in downtown Columbus. I am very interested in making our
downtown a place of pride, beauty and fascination for our whole region.
Downtowns are the one place for everyone and if our community is to be
successful, then our downtown has to shine. That means housing, parks and
streetcars.

I'm Chris Moore, and I work for a local labor union. Being a member of the
labor movement, my main goal is to attempt to have all people represented
and given what they deserve no matter who they are, where they come from or
what they do. Aesthetics are great, but there are thousands of people in
this city who can't get to work, take their kids to the doctor, or pay their
bills. This city as a whole is especially good at whitewashing these issues
and ignoring the people who deal with them. Everything is about priorities,
and too often those who make decisions have priorities that do not reflect
that of the majority. Hopefully this forum will be a way to discuss those
issues. Thanks, and I look forward to taking part.

COIF Folks,
I'm John Gideon. I'm Past President and a current Board Member of Consider
Biking (formerly Central Ohio Bicycle Advocacy Coalition). I am a member of the
MORPC Citizen Advisory Committee, the Franklin County Safe Communities
Coalition, and the Columbus Area Pedestrian Safety Committee. I am also a board
member of the Thunderhead Alliance, the coalition of national, regional, and
local bike/ped advocacy organizations. I've lived in Columbus most of my life.
There are many urgent issues facing us, but I believe that the most pressing
issue is sustainability and health. We desperately need to adopt sustainable
strategies to make us personally healthy, to make our communities safe and
healthy, and to make the climate of our world healthy.
I see all of our problems -- traffic congestion, the epidemic of inactivity and
obesity, soaring health care costs, weak economic development, ballooning
energy prices, global warming, persistent crime, and social isolation and
alienation -- arising from a lifestyle reliant on consuming cheap energy.
Our dependence on plentiful and cheap energy has caused us to develop unhealthy
and unsustainable auto-dependent and inactive lifestyles. This has to change.
Just as we have experienced the benefits of the efficiencies of the information
technology revolution we need a revolution in how we live and how we get
around. We must begin to value the most energy efficient forms of
transportation -- walking, bicycling, transit -- as well as the most energy
efficient forms of living and the most efficient forms of land use.
In short, we have to get back to living in well-designed cities: high-density,
compact, multi-use, livable cities where traveling and doing everything else is
most efficient and least wasteful.
In our arrogance and wastefulness we departed from the smart design of cities
that had developed over the centuries and created an energy-intensive, land
consuming, inactivity-inducing car culture that is destroying us personally,
destroying our communities, and destroying our planet.
We will be healthier, safer, and happier when we adopt more sustainable,
less-energy-dependent lifestyles. We need to change our "built environment" so
that we can live this kind of lifestyle.
I hope we can have a productive dialogue.
Thanks for starting this forum.

In low-income and affordable housing, access to decent and reliable
transportation is a huge issue. Columbus is so spread out that it is
difficult for many without cars to get to school/work/child care centers
etc. I hope that Columbus "fills in" intelligently.

In this overall discussion we should also focus on the role that poor land
use location and density policies play in excessive use of energy and
feelings of isolation. Much of the current Urban Land Institute literature
has documented this issue and they continue to propose solutions.
Unfortunately, the results are often technical and not easily read by large
numbers of people.

Hi, I am the VP for community services at the Columbus Jewish Federation and as
such I am responsible for planning for our community. I want to thank you for
getting this forum up and running.
I am particulary interested in issues that reduce sprawl and re-engage people
in building a vibrant urban core. In addition, there is a need to grow an
economic base with affordable, accessible transportation. Getting people to
jobs, good jobs easily is crucial to that endeavor.

Hello, I'm Ann Whelan.I'm a grandmother, a health educator and a bicycle
enthusiast. I am interested in ways to protect the environment and improve
health and quality of life. Right now I'm living in the suburbs (Grove City)
with my 40-60 miles a day freeway commute leaving me with little time or energy
to try to fit in a work out to address health issues associated with inadequate
activity. I'm not quite as brave as my husband John who rides his bike from
Grove City to Westerville and lives to tell about it. I think health issues
related to lack of activity and the energy crisis are no small coincidence and
therefore could be mutually solvable. Of course if we solve all of these
problems, I'd have to find a different career. I'm interested in improving bike
paths and public transportation and probably moving out of Grove City so that
maybe the work-out could be the commute (a safe bike ride or walk from home to
work) addressing both problems at the same time. I'd also be interested in ways
to provide safe and accessible places for all people but especially children to
spend more time being outdoors and active, instead of in front of a computer or
television. I also would be interested in participating with a biodiesel
co-op. I'm interested in learning from all of you and finding out more about
this type of forum since this is entirely new to me.

Hello all, I'm glad to have the opportunity to converse with you and work to
create a better community. I'm a father of, a bicyclist, an activist interested
in environmental and social justice issues, and an evangelist of online
community building.
I currently work for the State of Ohio in contract management and bicycle
commute from UA year round. I'm chair of UA Arts, on the board of
Conversation|Arlington, and very involved with the Columbus Social Media Cafe.
I've been fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to air commentaries on

I believe we are entering a new day where conversation and collaboration truly
have the opportunity to bring successful social change, let's not let that slip
away.

Hello. I am David Goldberger, a member of the OSU College of Law faculty and a
colleague of Peter Shane. I joined the forum because I am interested in
balanced and sensible development of public services here is Central Ohio. I
have lived in the area for over 25 years and am concerned that Ohio's
reluctance to expand public services ranging from transportation to education
to mental health care reflects a troubling, undifferentiated suspicion towards
government.

Hello. I am Matt LaMantia, the Regional Development Coordinator of the
Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission. The work I do focuses on addressing
development, land use, and economic development issues on a regional scale. I
am excited to learn how innovative tools, such as this forum, can be used to
help engage a broad constituency to educate amd advocate for more pragmatic and
sustainable public policies on how we continue to grow and prosper as a region.
Looking forward to seeing where these discussions go.

Hi. I am Charlie Wilson. I am a member of the OSU College of Law faculty, and
also a colleague of Peter Shane. I am a member of the Worthington School
Board. In addition, I am active in BREAD and several local social justice
initiatives involving health care, truancy, and youth.
I have several interests that seem to fit within this forum's subject matter.
I am interested in regional resource issues pertaining to education. How can
we be assured that all children have equal access to high-quality education
regardless of the housing constraints of their parent(s)? Does Franklin County
really need 16 totally independent school districts with 16 full-time
superintendents, assistant superintendents, HR officers, treasurers, special
education administrators, gifted student administrators, curriculum
coordinators, transportation coordinators, etc.?
I am also interested in how citizens become informed about local issues in a
rather densely populated county with numerous governmental entities. In an era
when most citizens rely on electronic media for their news, how do citizens
become informed about local issues that do not receive any electronic media
coverage. It is my observation that most citizens are much better informed
about world and national events than they are about local events that directly
impact their lives and where their votes are more likely to be determinative.
How many can even name their city council members, township trustees, school
board members, etc.?
I look forward to seeing where these discussion go.

Hello all.
I am Josh Vittie, a 28 year old, 5 (or so) year resident of Columbus, Ohio,
originally from the Greater Niagara Frontier of Western New York (Niagara Falls
- 15 miles N of Buffalo). I am finishing my B.A. this Summer at The Ohio State
University graduating with Distinction in Psychology, with a Major in
Psychology and a double minor in Criminology and Forensic Sciences. I will be
starting in Autumn at The John Glenn School of Public Affairs at The Ohio State
University to pursue a Master of Public Administration; the same program as Mr.
J. Wiener above.
I decided to join this group because in March I attended a workshop at the
Moritz College of Law pertaining to the rise of E-government, and met Mr. P.
Shane (also introduced above) who told me this group would be starting soon,
this seems to be an interesting forum where I may be able to get some questions
answered, voice my opinions, and read about issues that will have an effect on
the region (and the opinions of those who are either stakeholders in those
issues or are fairly well informed on said issues.
My background is fairly diverse - I have done everything from assembly work,
shipping/receiving, warehousing, to OTR truck driver, Paramedic in a paid
service back home, volunteer firefighter, and a bunch of other stuff that
wasn't all that interesting...
I look forward to reading many of your opinions, educating myself on issues in
the region, and seeing your comments to my opinions.
With warm regards,
Josh Vittie

Hello Everyone!
We are glad to say that we have had many insightful discussions on the forum
this summer, despite the draw of spending more time outdoors. Since the
forum kicked off last April, the forum has grown in membership to reach our
present number of 122 members!
Now, in the midst of the campaign season and with poignant changes in the
Nation's economy, there are certainly new things to discuss that pertain to
life for us in Central Ohio. Because of our growing membership over the
past months, we want to encourage new and old members alike to post a
personal introduction on this thread.
Remember that you can choose 'reply to all' to get the message out to the
whole group. If you want to stay on this thread, keep the subject line the
same. We would enjoy reading about the forum members--a bit about your
background, issues that you are concerned about and the like to help us all
understand the voices that make this forum work!
If you are a newer member, and an email user, remember to visit the website
at http://forums.e-democracy.org/groups/corif/ where you can browse the
entire archive of the forum, and meet some of the earlier members by reading
their introductions!
We look forward to hearing from you!

Hi,
My name is Shari Saunders. I am an Administrative Coordinator with the Mid-Ohio
Regional Planning Commission's Center for Energy & Environment and the Public &
Government Affairs Department. I have been with MORPC almost four years. Before
that I was the secretary of a local church for 15 years.
I grew up in Battle Creek, Michigan and graduated from Kellogg Community
College. However, my husband, daughter and I have lived in central Ohio for
over 20 years. The majority of those years were in Reynoldsburg where we
currently reside.
One of the most pleasant surprises when my family moved here was the Metro
Parks system. It has only become better and better. I love to show off our
parks to visitors and brag about the bike/walking trails.
I believe it's important to be good stewards of the earth and its resources and
that we need to make every effort towards becoming a region that practices
sustainability. I do want to help make this world a better place for all and I
believe we all can work together to accomplish this.

Hi! My name is Amelia Costanzo and I'm an Associate Planner in the
Transportation Department of the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission. The
work I do focuses mainly on land use and collecting data to ensure that the
information we have about land use in Central Ohio is as current as possible.
I look forward to participating in this forum and learning about what's
important to Central Ohio.
