Thanks to Marc for adding civility to this discussion. In this spirit, not
trying to be paranoid, I , IMHO, feel the need to drop the "a" word from the
subject of this issue. Like the republicans, who like to repeat some untruth or
fear issue over and over again, I believe repeating the "a" word is not a good
idea. Yes, Palin is inciting hurtful and criminal things against Burack Obama,
but I've lived through too many political "a's" and attempts at it in my
lifetime to harp on that word. In this spirit of civility, I still remain
feisty and condemn anyone who talks about killing or its potentiality of any
specific person, except, perhaps, Osama bin Laden.
Just because Obama is not yet the President, should not stop the Secret Service
from pursuing and arresting anyone who shouts "kill". Where is the president on
this issue? If someone shouted this against him, they would be arrested. There
ought to be a law, if there isn't, against this kind of behavior and threats
against anyone under Secret Service protection.

Actually Gary, I believe there is. But maybe I am slicing the issue too thinly.
Secret Service personnel are assigned to all presidential and vice presidential
candidates from the major parties at least. They may also be assigned to minor
party candidates, but that is another issue.
Their assignment is to protect the candidates. If someone would threaten the
candidate they are assigned to they are required to take protective action. I
assume that means any candidate. I can't imagine a scenario where that wouldn't
be accurate.
Of course, in large crowds where someone yells out something that could be
considered a threat against the opponent, I wonder how effective the Secret
Service would be in finding the person, and witnesses who would accuse the
perpetrator.
I think it comes down to what is campaign crowd rhetoric and what is a real
threat. Once the voters speak, assuming we have a fair election this year, the
Secret Service's role will change to protecting the President-elect. If that is
Barack Obama, they will have to take seriously any comments made by anyone that
would threaten him or his family.
Unfortunately, McCain and company are too interested in working up their base
to probably notice when someone shouts these things from their crowds of
worshipers. Remember it is a whole lot easier to rewind a tape to listen more
closely to what was recorded than it is for the human ear to pick up individual
statements from a noisy crowd when you are also concentrating on your speech.
