Doug Mann Posted at 6:25am: "Bad idea."
CJ Sparrow's response:
It is a bad I idea, for those like Doug Mann, who support a minimum wage
increase to $15, but who cannot defend their position on this issue against my
arguments against it.
Of course, it is also a bad Idea for any one who does not want to let diverse
opinions be expressed, which they do not agree with.
Having known Doug for a long time, and after being a member of at least one
organization with him for many years, the Democratic Socialists of America, (at
least he and his wife regularly attend meetings), and after running with him,
along with 33 other candidates, for Mayor of Minneapolis in 2013, where we were
both denied the right to participate in many, and in my case, all of the
Mayoral Candidate forums, I am extremely surprised to hear that statement
coming from him. He, more than most, should be aware of the attempts to keep
socialists from speaking at forums and other public events, which has on
occasion led to their being assaulted, jailed and sometimes killed.

Doug Mann posted at 10:22pm, Apr 14:
"Don't forget to put on your pirate costume, Captain"
Wearing my pirate costume was a tactic that was useful in the 2013 Mayoral
campaign, but, it is probably no longer helpful. There were 34 other candidates
in the race many of whom had held other offices, or had prior electoral
political experience and therefor more name recognition than I had. However,
because of my unusual and humorous name and costume, (which I had only worn at
Occupy Wall Street demonstrations and events prior to the press latching on to
a photograph in a story on my blog about one of these demonstrations) and
because of the record number of candidates who were running, my name and
costume became a national story.
While it wasn't my idea to use the costume as part of my campaign, and I had
changed my name long before I ever decided to run for office, I was able to
recognize a good thing when I saw it. From then on, as another candidate, Don
Samuels, pointed out, to his dismay, in a story on Channel 11, I had more name
recognition than any of the other candidates. My costume was so influential in
the campaign that, as I am sure you remember, several of the other mainstream
candidates, chose to wear costumes as well, most notably, Bob Fine, who wore a
Superman costume, and Stephanie Woodruff, who wore Saran Wrap to demonstrate
"transparency". Of course, many of the non mainstream candidates, following my
example, began wearing costumes long before that. While Mayor Hodges did not
wear a costume during the campaign, she asked me to have her picture taken with
me while in costume. I was also informed by a maintenance person that she has a
campaign poster, with the costume, from my campaign for County Commissioner, in
her office. Also the theme of the celebration following the election, which was
attended by Mayor Elect Hodges, was a kind of a costume party. Maybe you should
have worn a costume yourself, and maybe you could have garnered more than a
few hundred votes. Maybe the jolly green giant would work for you, or how about
the Hulk when you get angry, (I understand you are a Green Party member as
well, or at least you were recently seeking their endorsement).
While I was not able to translate that name recognition into enough votes to
come close to winning in that election, in the next election I entered, in
2014, which was for Hennepin County Commissioner, in District 4, I was able to
get over 10,000 votes. That was almost half of what was needed to win. I did
that with little money, and against a popular incumbent. That would not have
been possible without my campaign posters with the costume, which was very
popular with residents and business owners alike, It was for that reason that I
was able to place more campaign lawn signs and posters in businesses, than all
of the other candidates, for all other offices, combined for that year. I was
also able to keep them up longer, with many of them still being up over two
years later. Then as now I chose not to wear the pirate costume, but I still
have the name, and the picture of me with the pirate costume was on all of my
lawn signs. The day following the election for County Commissioner, a photo of
the ballot, with my name on it, went viral on the internet and received about
600,000 views, and so Captain Jack Sparrow for Hennepin County Commissioner,
then became an international story. One of the tag lines in one of the news
sources covering the story was "He is the worst politician I have ever heard
of" follows by a line popularized by the character played by Johny Depp in one
of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies "Ah, but you have heard of me." This
year the picture is on my business cards as well as my other literate, and of
course my legal name is still Captain Jack Sparrow.
So, Doug, are you saying that it is not because of my ideas, but rather it is
because of my pirate costume and name, that I should not be allowed into the
Minneapolis Mayoral candidate forums? You are starting to sound more like a
member of one of the Bolshevik,"Socialist" parties like the Trotskyist,
Socialist Alternative or the Socialist Workers Party (SWP), the latter of which
I think we both belonged to at one time. In my case I quit over 40 years ago,
when I realized that, "Democratic Centralism" was mostly about centralism and
had little if anything to do with democracy, and the SWP had nothing to do with
Socialism or true Communism either, for that matter.
What all of these parties, the Trotskyist parties, as well as the Maoist,
parties, like Freedom Road Socialist Organization, the Stalinist parties, and
the CPUSA, which I understand is no longer a Stalinist party, but still adheres
to "Democratic Centralist" model, have in common is this: None of them allow
for freedom of expression once the Central Committee has decided on an issue.
To take a contrary position to the party bosses is considered a heresy in the
same way that contrary views are treated in a religious organization, which I
believe these "socialist" organizations ultimately are.
You and I, however, are both members of the Democratic Socialists of America.
The DSA has not even made a decision, as a local organization, on the issue of
the minimum wage, and even if we did we would still allow, and I hope encourage
debate on that issue. If you can't accept that, which is necessary for a truly
democratic organization, than go back to the SWP or join Socialist Alternative.
I think you would be more comfortable there, where you wouldn't have to hear
contrary views, that is, as long as you agree with the views of the Central
Committee.

Sparrow should wear a giant cockroach costume. As a red baiter and petty
capitalist, he's all about class warfare between the 4th and 5th quintiles of
the population: the merely poor vs. destitute. There's no evidence that paying
people at the bottom a living wage would hurt the real capitalists despite
their constant whining and lobblying against it. But those who want to see the
bottom 40%- 50% fight over the crumbs of society aren't going to see their
dysotpian fantasy if these folks have enough to live on.

Giving all your love to just one mann.
You'll have bad times

Even though he's hard to understand
And if you love him oh be proud of him,
'Cause after all he's just a mann
Stand by your mann,
Give him two arms to cling to,
And something warm to come to
When nights are cold and lonely
Stand by your mann,

Keep giving all the love you can

Another possible reason might be that this is a violation of campaign laws.
We certainly expect our DFL candidates to be law-abiding citizens ... not

I had the impression that displaying campaign signs had been ruled a
matter of free speech. In fact, MN Statute 0211B.045 says:

Even though we do have some pols who appear to be for sale, I don't
think Captain Jack falls into that category (even though I'm not a
supporter of his). And regardless, "noncommercial" was certainly
intended by the legislature to include campaign signs and posters.
If contributing millions of dollars in dark money is free speech, why
not things that the average joe can afford?
