Minneapolis is not California, and California is changing its face as
well. We will see how well its population recovers after Covid-19. I
don't know if I've ever met a Minnesotan who thought the California way of
doing things would benefit Minnesota. I strongly doubt (bringing this
thread back into the pasture) that the Los Angeles way of doing things
would fly in Minneapolis.
Considering the latest Minneapolis construction stats that I recall, and
the changing business model, (WFH not commute) I wonder if we could solve
all our housing shortages pretty quickly when office building owners give
up looking for tenants.
AND If you want a look at how high density populations impact safety and
security issues, take a look at the MPD crime maps on the policing
dashboard. When there is a trouble house, it very, very likely is NOT
students causing the trouble at all. That is a huge change, and the
people who are causing trouble aim firearms at the people they disagree
with and pull the trigger.
College students might fight or throw a rock, but I don't recall ever
hearing about someone firing a handgun at someone until this year, and the
hotshots were not college students.

1 - we are not California. We are not California. We are not California.
2 - the last thing we need is more rental property - that is how we make people
poor.
3 - opening up our last affordable ownership housing option - the single family
home - to widespread destruction makes us poorer as a society and enriches
corporations and the wealthy.
We are not California.

I think the massive rectangular boxes plopped on top of underground parking
garages, some containing nearly 300 rental units or more, are far more
problematic than a cluster of triple-deckers or a handful of 4-plexes. I’d
much rather have a cluster of triple-deckers nearby than an Alatus 288-plex.
I agree with Carol, with rents in these massive rectangular boxes containing
100s of units plopped on top of parking garages approaching $2000/month, and
interest rates at record or near record lows, there’s no reason someone
couldn’t be making mortgage payments rather than rent payments. Of course, not
everyone may choose to buy rather than rent, but when the overwhelming majority
of what’s being built is rental, very few have the choice to take their rent
expenditures and use it to buy.
And if you’re a homeowner, the skyrocketing prices due to the scarcity do you
no good. You may be able to sell for an inflated price, but where can you take
the loot and move to? Some massive rectangular box monstrosity plopped on top
of a 200-car garage? And if you don’t want to sell, you’re stuck with inflated
property taxes on you inflated-value home.
The big box apartment building builders are screwing us all.
