I know this is old news as Lipine Sila has been found guilty on all the
charges, but something new has been brought to the table.
In June 2007 White Elephant Trust and Unlimited Paenga Tawhiti Secondary School
hosted a youth conference in response to the Edgeware Road tragedy which
resulted in death of two young people and injuries to others. Following the
conference a report was compiled, outlining a series of ‘calls to action’ from
young people who attended the conference, and highlighting some youth-driven
recommendations.
On Wednesday 28 May, as part of Youth Week, this report will be officially
released at White Elephant Head Quarters (Level 1, 1 Bedford Row).
The release event will also be an opportunity to hear what White Elephant and
her partners have done towards achieving some of the Report’s recommendations.
So join us on 28 May at 5:30pm for coffee, a few words from guests and the
release of the Report.
Our aim is to distribute this report to as many interested people as possible.
For more information contact: Anthony Rohan, Chair, White Elephant Trust, 021

On Wednesday I will post the report on this forum for you all to read and
comment on with each other and myself, and I will answer any questions you may
have to the best of my ability.

Hi Matt,
I suspect this may be pretty obvious but have you invited all the media
along?
Keep it up, Young Sir.
Tom (65 and getting older!)

Thanks Tom. From what I understand there was a photographer from The Press, a
student journalist, and one other journalist from a local newspaper.
Unfortunately I was unable to make it to the release myself, but I have read
through it on the Internet.
For those who would like to look over the report, it can be viewed here:

I read the report last night. There were no surprises for me there (apart
from the number of politicians involved), probably because in the field I
work I interact with marginalised-feeling young people all the time. Its
an ambitious and well-presented report which seems primarily aimed at
politicians - but I hope more parents give it a read -therefore I am unsure
what sort of real traction it will gain.
What that report says to me is that young people are wanting a sense of
community acceptance, while I think all most adults are wanting is a sense
that young people are conforming. I very much sympathise with the point
about The Press and its first imperative to sell newspapers, with the
resulting bias on what/how it reports. I really don't know what to say
about the police LOL
Matt, your White Elephant Trust is a really great self-help tool and I hope
you can get plenty of young people involved. While it certainly merits
community support I hope it can attain its aims and isn't swamped by adults
with agendas. Though if I still had a car I'd volunteer to pick up kids at
night and run them home for you because several friends of mine for a few
years have been going out at all hours to pick up their teens - few
questions asked - and its really done wonders for their relationships. In
particular the teens and their mates who want a ride home don't get wasted
anymore.
Kind regards,
Paula.
