Sorry if this has been covered...but the wife and I woke up this morning and
walked over to Isabel's (42nd and Cedar) to find it..gone.
I'd been out of town, but what happened?? Casualty of the new Caribou?
I thought I had read it was expanding, going to get a wine/beer...etc.
Any word on what is planned for the space?

It was an abrupt closing. I saw Tim, one of Isabel's owners, packing their
furniture and equipment into a moving van on Sunday, March 16; they've been
closed ever since. A friend who owns a business nearby told my wife that
Isabel's was behind on rent and vacated without notice to their landlord.
Caribou was certainly a contributor to, but not the sole cause of, their
decline.
I haven't heard any new plans for the space. I was excited by the talk of
Isabel's expanding to open a bistro/wine bar in the adjacent former salon
space, and would love to see a new business in the mold of the Riverview Cafe &
Wine Bar. It could be a solid complement for the upscale successes of Colossal
Cafe and ReGifts on that corner. However, the tightening economy is a big
challenge to any start-up. As a neighbor and patron of my local businesses, I
will be sad but not surprised if it takes a while for something new to replace
Isabel's.

That site is one of those that never sustains a business for more then a
couple years. Perhaps the new owners could ask some help and have a sage
burning ceremony upon opening the next venture.

As far as the bistro/wine bar credits, it sounded there wasn't enough water and
sewer credits for the location to expand. I think they are lumped together.
From what I understand there are a fixed number of water credits so they have a
good understanding of how much water is needed for the city. The hair salon
previously did not have enough so Isabels would have had to pay to get the
credits.
I heard a new small chain coffee shop was going to move in but I do not
remember the name. Most of their locations were out of the metro area.
Tillie's Bean has the best coffee in the neighborhood so....
