Local figures to be honoured by Oxford Brookes High profile individuals in the Oxfordshire community are to be honoured by Oxford Brookes during the University’s annual graduation week (5 – 12 September). For those who don't look at the web, the list is as follows: Honorary degrees: Aziz-Ur Rahman, restaurant owner David Fickling, Oxford-based children’s publisher Tish Francis, Emeritus Director of the Oxford Playhouse Honorary doctorates: Steve Ridgway, Chief Executive of Virgin Atlantic Airways Clive Stafford Smith, Human rights lawyer and campaigner against the death penalty Sir David King, Director of the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment Sir Iain Chalmers, Medical researcher and campaigner on healthcare issues Zuzanna Kalisiak, Co-founder and Pro-Rector of the Polish Open University Neil Bartlett, Director, author and performer Teresa Hayter, Scholar, author, and campaigner on migration and asylum rights I don't see any Headington or Marston people there -- so they are not local people by the standards of this forum :-) More information on the Brookes website: http://www.brookes.ac.uk/about/news/honorarydegrees
Actually, as one of the members of the Honorary Conferment Committee that
deliberates on honorary awards, I would suggest there's no real reason why the
local community shouldn't nominate people if they think there are worthies who
might be suitable.
It's an open process internally - with all staff invited to nominate people, so
if you think of anyone local for future years, just grab a member of Brookes
staff or email me directly (we will be asking for nominations for next year
very soon) and hope they can "sponsor" your idea!
Having said it's "open" it is of course confidential, in that we don't want
names bandied about and then find they cannot accept, or names bandied around
that the committee doesn't endorse in the end for whatever reason. If you want
to know more about criteria, let me know - we're in the middle of making a few
revisions to them but the basics remain the same.
The more connections with the university the better - and especially so if they
want to contribute in the future - we'd prefer to have an ongoing relationship
with honorary grandates if possible, ese it just seems like a "gong", but for
an Honorary Doctorate it can be little more than some kind of special expertise
or achievement in one of the fields the university teaches or researches.
