Apologies: bit of long rant.
I just cant help but thinking...
time and again (and again) as Mr Steele continues harping about the atty (ONE
of the attys) volunteering their time representing Smartgrowth and the "Red
Sign Brigade " (as he likes calling Minneapolis For Everyone- not bad
shorthand- and sorry Matt ~rather than disparaging - it works for me as a
battle cry)....
In this battle to challenge Comp 2040 on environmental grounds.
So ~ this ONE atty lives in a "McMansion" built in the footprint of a bulldozed
home.
Here's my thought;
SO WHAT!?
Does every client agree with every detail of their attys life?Do these details
change the narrative of seeking an envirnomental review? NO!
SO WHAT! If Lisa McDonald held a fundraiser for Sheriff Stanek (apparently the
right wing anti-christ so no decent liberal should be caught dead seen having
contact?) Isn't THAT the kind of thinking that gifted us the "current occupant"
of the WH?
Are we to have no contact... with the "enemy".Then WHO decides? And what a
colossal waste of time, energy, resources and opportunities at compromise!
Perhaps if City Council had spent a bit more energy in the early years (now we
know comp 2040 has been in the works for closer to 5+ years than the 3 being
touted earlier.
Ofcourse, admitting things started THAT long ago would require much more
explaining...where was the public engagement?Completely Non-existent !!When it
might have been most beneficial! When cooperation & compromise might have helped
build trust and avoid the constant misunderstandings, divisiveness and out
right hostility ~ displayed by our ELECTED (and non - think planning comm)
OFFICIALS as well as BOTH sides ~ The Blue & Red Sign Brigades !
Listen to that..both sides!
We need to find SOME way to just STOP!
STOP snarky, snide commentary that furthers not the discourse! STOP feeding
into the divisiveness.
WE ARE ONE CITY. WE ARE ALL NEIGHBORS. WE MUST LEARN...relearn(?) how to live
together again.
Only then will we find a way out of this morass of misinformation,
misunderstanding, misuse of public power...
I've made my point..maybe?
WHO CARES where the atty lives?Who cares who Lisa McDonald holds parties for in
the privacy of her home?
I care about storm water run off; a tree canopy healthy enough for absorbing
the inevitable exhaust of cars idling in traffic; I care about the safety of
peds & bikers (I am a transit & ped person, no car for years! But cannot
fathom building density without parking); I care about parking...how will my
mother (still an excellent driver but walking...?) get to the small businesses
she likes? Will she (and others) simply drive to the malls? The answer so
FAR...YES! I care about the equity being sucked out of OUR city! I care that
Calif, Virginia, Chicago, New Jersey, etc...these developers are buying up the
home owing opportunities of OUR LOCAL population - relegating them to an
endless cycle of chasing an ever decreasing supply of affordable rentals.I care
that EVERY new building is raising the rents higher and higher. .. Whether
"luxury" or not.I care that help for those most in need is harder and harder to
get! I care that someone trying to live on SSDI would need to spend their
ENTIRE check just to afford...what our city has identified as affordable...
something like $900/tiny studio! This affordable number qualifies the owner for
tax credits?I care that a wait list for affordable housing/section 8 can take 5
YEARS! Where is someone to live ...FOR 5 YEARS?Is there any wonder we have a
homeless problem?
I care that Comp2040 states some lofty goals...with NO ANSWERS, NO PLANS for
how to reach them.
I care that Comp will actually end up hurting those communities most gutted by
the last major move by the city...the intro of Interstate system. We decimated
Rondo and the area around MLK Park (for just a sampling) Now, we may do it
again by taking home ownership possibilities away from this community
(MLK-CARAG etal). I care that our City Council & Mayor (and appointed members
of planning commision, CPED staff) all remained so intent on passing Comp...
they forgot their duty to represent THOSE WHO ELECTED THEM!
An issue that may come home.. to roost.
Sorry for the long rant. I care about ALOT of things. I care about OUR CITY.
I just really dont care where the atty lives...or how his house got built.Nor
whom Lisa McD chooses to party with.
MUCH bigger fish to fry.Can we start...with comity?Humility, a genuine interest
in HEARING the "other side"... and try to understand. Can we not immediately
jump to racist, ageist, elitist..etc.Can.it not simply be... we disagree bit I
dont need to hate you so lets talk.
Just sayin. This grows tiresome. imho.

[Mpls] House just bulldozed-
So, just gathering the facts here...
- The property address listed in the previous post had a 4,000 square foot
house built in 1940 (per MLS)
- The property was sold in June 2018 for $800,000 (per Hennepin County)
- The single family home on the property was torn down (permit BLDG734999,
permit value $20,000) presumably to be replaced by another single family home,
since...
- The property is currently zoned R1, the lowest-density zoning district in the
City of Minneapolis.
- The property was purchased by the named partner of a Minneapolis law firm,
whose colleague and other named partner 1. hosted a fundraiser for the failed
lawsuit against the Mpls2040 plan 2. at his $1.7 million single family home
which he built in 2007 after receiving a shoreland overlay variance and
demolishing the previous single family home on the property.
It appears that, out of the hundreds of Minneapolis single family homes which
have been demolished and replaced by a larger and more expensive single family
homes (which categorically disprove your anti-Mpls2040 narrative) you picked
the specimen that most brilliantly disproves your anti-Mpls2040 narrative.
