Over the weekend I bumped into a sitting Newham councillor. He told me that the
Mayor would be ensuring that all councillors who currently do not live in
Newham will not be allowed to stand in the next local elections. It was news to
me that there are councillors who live outside the borough!
If this is true, my interpretation is that the new Chief Exec may well have put
his foot down; it makes sense to assume that the CE of a local authority will
have a half-decent idea where the councillors elected to his authority do
actually live.
On another issue: does anyone know why Chris Wood has left the employment of
the Council?
I thought it was common knowlegde that not all the current councilers lived
in the bourogh, one of them lives in Southend, several of them only own
houses here which they have use to ligitimise there claim but then rent them
out in the private rental sector or register at a family members address.
Jean,
I was being facetious...
Seems my information was correct...as reported in this week's Newham Recorder (page 16). A Labour Party imbecile, I mean "spokesman" said: "It is likely that the local party will take in a range of factors when interviewing potential council candidates [Friend of the mayor? Always willing to vote with the mayor? Too stupid to understand what is going on around them? Willingness to stick their snouts in the trough?] . Establishing that people live in Newham is one issue they will wish to examine [Er, that's been in the Labour Party rules for as long as I can remember; and, why hasn't it been an issue that has been examined to-date? If there are Labour councillors who live outside the borough - as we know there are - why are they not booted off?]. It is also quite likely that some current councillors will stand down; some will wish to focus on other aspects of their life [counting all the money they've acquired while sitting in silence] and some will have achieved what they wanted and moved on.[ditto]" He added: "Every four years we see some change, and that is normal and healthy in a democracy [Let's hope democracy is "normal and healthy" in 2010 and we see a change of administration at the Town Hall and there's a new Mayor]". I understand that Ian Tompkins (Head of Communications) is also moving on, or has moved on - to West Ham United no-less, or so I've been told. I don't know if this is all part of a possible "house clearance" exercise by the new Chief Executive, but I've been told that he ordered investigative enquiries into five Town Hall departments when he started and the resulting reports have not been reassuring; it seems the communications department was one of those subject to investigation.
