Noting all the young parents on the forum, can anyone recommend back-up
daycare options in the neighborhood?
We have a wonderful situation where a local stay-at-home mom watches our
two children (7 mo, 2 years 5 mo) Monday through Thursday. This works
great, but when illness strikes their family (like today) or when my
work requires special attention during the day on Friday when the kids
are normally home, I need a back-up plan.
So what I am hoping to compile is a list of last minute daycare options
where I can call up the evening before or morning of to see if that
particular location has the (legal) openings that day. Or alternatively,
I'd be willing to swap occassional Friday half-days with one other
family who's children are around the same age.

I just started working at the College of St Catherine, in Highland Park, St. Paul, and they have Drop-In Daycare. Here's a list from their website of drop-in daycare facilities. http://minerva.stkate.edu/offices/administrative/access.nsf/pages/dropinchildcare/?OpenDocument&Expand=3.3 Also, although I haven't visited it, across the street from Roosevelt High School is a Child Resource Center, I bet they have some information or referrals. Let us know if you learn anything! Karen Standish Ave
This page has a specific reference to the College of St Catherine's Drop-In Childcare Service. Under "Children's Center" http://minerva.stkate.edu/offices/administrative/ecc.nsf/pages/category2/?OpenDocument&Expand=2 Although I have not used it yet, I have visited and the center looks really fantastic. I wonder how much space availability they really have, as a result. Our issue as a family is when our beloved childcare providers go on vacation. When they are gone for a week, I'm curious what other people do with their children. Since I just started a job, I will not be in a position to take my own "vacation" when my childcare providers do. This is something we are struggling with as a family.
I am a licensed daycare provider in the area. Finding backup daycare is
difficult. The reasons are as follows:
1. There is not enough daycare here, in the 55406 and 55417 zipcode area in
Jaunary had no openings at any of the daycare homes.
2. The county requires us to have so much paperwork on every child in our care
that it is hard to keep up on all the changes on drop in care. I always tease
my new parents that they will feel like they are buying another house when they
have finished all of the forms and signatures required by law. Many of us are
also on the food program for our daycare children so parents know they are
getting good meals while in our care, but that also means more paperwork and
forms. Plus license workers and food program personal can stop by at anytime
with no warning to make sure you are following the law.
3. Also it is difficult keeping all of the payments and income reports for all
the drop in child at tax time.
We know it is hard to work around everyones illness and vacations but the
county does not give us any freedom. We have to have paperwork on every child
here during daycare hours.
