Mr. Graham,
I've read both of your posts on this subject a
couple of times and don't see anything that would
cause me to change my letter. I didn't get a lot
of feedback on it and appreciate yours although I
don't appreciate the smears and
mischaracterizations. Appreciate Gail's thoughts too.
Yes, the country is polarized in a bad way, but
that doesn't create a moral or intellectual
"equivalence" between the two "sides."
It happens that I grew up in a time and place
where many of the more capable and "progressive"
elected officials were Republicans. I'm not a
political bigot, and I don't think the evil the
Republicans have fallen into is good for the
state, or the DFL for that matter. But just
look at the Minnesota Republican candidates for
Governor, Attorney General, and so on. Just
listen to the mean, stupid, harmful, and
untruthful things they are mostly saying. Just
think about the horrible consequences of their
possibly getting elected. The problem of Trump,
the problem of Stauber (and Johnson, Wardlow,
Hagedorn ...) are statewide problems, nationwide
problems, and in fact global problems.
There is no pleasure in writing this. I would
far rather we had several responsible political
parties competing on the basis of what they want
to do for the state and its people. But that's not present-day reality.
To get a better sense of proportion you might
consider letting go of Fox News, etc, and start
reading some overseas-based publications such as the Guardian.
