Hi, I’ve built some maps covering Greater Bedminster which show the crime ranking against other areas in England. Each area contains around 800 households, so you can easily see crime at the neighbourhood level. Just type in your postcode, zoom in and see how your area ranks. You can also see if it has moved up or down the table. The maps are totally free to use. http://www.mindyourstreet.com/bristol-crime.html I hope the maps are both useful and interesting - look forward to your comments! Regards, Harry B
I'm sure there must be a purpose to this map but I'm not sure what it is. It
comes up with two sets of figures but there doesn't appear to be any
explanation of what the figures represent or what are supposed to mean. Unless
they're placed in some sort of context they're really meaningless.
Hi,
There's a key on the right hand side of the map. Each area is ranked against
all areas of the UK on its crime rate, so a ranking of 1 means a high crime
rate and a ranking of 32,000 the lowest. The figures are based on the
govenment's Indices of Multiple Deprivation from 2004 and 2007, so you can see
if the area has improved (gone down) or got worse (gone up).
Hope this helps!

Hi Harry
I must say I was initially as MYSTIFIED as Celia by this.
Superficially its just a Google street Map or optional Sat photo, with a red
filter to stop you seeing it properly.
After your second mail I found that if you maxed the scale it produced
statistics in a flag.
I still think she's correct that there is no effective key. Just red is very
bad and green is 32,000 x better, or something.
So when I inspect my bit of Southville I get a score of 3597 now, which I
take to be 11 percentage points away from appalling, whereas three years
earlier it was 2058 which was six percentage points away from appalling, so
the improvement over three years is 5 percent, (the change figure is 1539),
or should I be saying seventy-five percent and congratulating everybody on
the huge improvement. Which I do if true.
More worrying Spike Island appears to be a den of iniquity, close to the
worst in the country and deteriorating sharply.
A Martian reading this satellite map might conclude that it was safe to land
in Southville for an hour or two without his spaceship being joyridden, but
that he should not proceed across Vauxhall Bridge without an armed escort.
:(
That isn't actually my perception as I toddle over there on my bike. :)
Have I MISINTERPRETED these statistics?
all best
Stephen
PS to be sure of getting home again I think my Martian needs to focus his
attention on Stoke Bishop or Henleaze , and avoid the Oldbury Court Estate
area of Downend which is going downhill fast!
I would say over to you, but I suspect you've now run out of posting
lives...
anyway, when you can, do fill us in on the finer points of this, as it IS
interesting!
Hi Stephen,
great to know that the maps are of use! To help out, and in response to the
comments above, I've added a coloured key.
I think you've pretty much got the gist of the maps. They rank areas relative
to each other, and the rank is generated from all crime measures for the area
(not just violent crime.) Still, apparently a high prevalence of vandalism and
anti-social behaviour does more to harm a house's value than being burgled ;)
A figure of 3597 puts the area just outside the top 10% of areas affected by
crime in England. As a rule of thumb, the more 'urban' an area the higher the
rank. At the moment access to absolute statistics for small areas is difficult,
although some police forces provide these (West Mids, West Yorkshire and the
Met.)
I'll look at ranking the areas relative to Bristol alone, which may help. This
is what the Met does for its maps of London, where the majority of areas are
shown as 'average' (obviously.) In reality 'average for London' is still pretty
high! I'll also look at some better colours (any suggestions?) although this
will take a while due to the way the maps are built (a little time consuming
too!)
Hope this answers your questions for now. I've one life left today so I'll save
it for when a few more questions build up!
