1. Trump responding to the abject failure of his lack of leadership and
direction on the covid pandemic has canceled the Jacksonville part of
the Republican Convention after having moved it from North Carolina
because of the same threats from the pandemic.
2. We are facing the same shortages of PPE and testing that we faced in
March and April in the North East. He had always had the authority to
ramp up production but continues to betray the American people by not
using it. Today, the press is reporting on Texas hospitals making
decisions to sent patients home to die. Seriously, did Trump learn no
lessons from Italy or New York?
3. We also have press reports of executives make a billion in stock
profits in vaccine developing companies benefiting from a Federal effort
headed by a $1 a year contractor whose financial interests are secret.
4. Trump is pushing for a full reopening of our public schools with
support from DeVos who puts out tripe on children and virus
transmission. Interesting that his son's private school will not be
reopening for full in person learning. it is discussing "hybrid"
learning. Maybe trump will put him a public school he forcing to open?
5. I find the argument over Confederate-named bases interesting. Only
three Confederate Generals later served in the US Army. They served in
the Spanish American War and the Philippine Insurrection. They are
Gens. Wheeler, Rosser and Fitzhugh Lee. All three interestingly cavalry
officers. Of the three only Wheeler had a base named for him, since
deactivated. Wheeler is also the only one with a statue in the US
Capitol. These three and Ge. Longstreet are the only Confederate
Generals I am aware of whose post Civil War actions deserve recognition.
Longstreet is a particularly interesting case. He fought effectively in
both the Eastern and Western theaters of the Civil War. After the war,
he sought reconciliation, joined the Republican Party, served in several
roles as a civil servant and ambassador ti the Ottoman Empire. He lead
New Orleans police, and African-American militias against the
Anti-Reconstructionist White League at the 1874 Battle of Liberty Place.
The Battle was an effort of White Supremacists to seize control of
Louisiana's state Government. Ultimately, President Grant sent is a US
Army regiment to move the White League out of the state capitol, armory
and downtown after three days. Needless to say, those celebrating
Confederate "heritage" have left the most able of Lee's Lieutenants out
of those deemed worthy of having statues and facilities named after
him. He also died of pneumonia after serving as one of Sherman's pall
bearers.
5. Do you remember the NRA attacks on the "jack-booted government thugs"
(ATF agents enforcing Federal firearms laws)? Where is the outrage from
the NRA and the Republicans who espouse limited government over the
outrageous unConstitutional overreach of Trump in usurping state and
local police powers with Federal agents in Portland? This is
reminiscent of George III use of British forces in the Colonies to usurp
the policing authority of Colonial Assemblies. I find the silence from
the right positively deafening.
