RNC Protests: 16 park permits issued by St. Paul
http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/node/12336
by Paul Demko, Minnesota Independent
The City of St. Paul has issued 16 park permits for gatherings of at
least 25 people during the Republican National Convention. The permits
have been provided to seven different groups planning events at the
five downtown parks where such gatherings will be allowed. Most of the
groups are expressly opposed to Republican policies, such as Women
Against Military Madness, the Welfare Rights Committee and True Blue
Minnesota. But at least one organization staging an RNC event,
Families United for Our Troops and Their Mission, is supportive of the
ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Among the flowers and messages of remembrance placed by friends of
Joseph Sodd II near the place of his death was John Donne's poem Death
Be Not Proud, written in chalk on the brick pavers along 19th Avenue
South. Underlined twice were the words "our best men," and underlined
once: "desperate men."

Okay, I really intended to get this post up days ago, or at least
sometime before Sunday (today), because today is the day of the weekly
Kingfield Farmers Market, which runs from 9 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. at 43rd
and Nicollet Ave. S., but life got hectic, and I had to go to Chicago
for a conference, and so here it is, 9:20 a.m. on a Sunday morning. So
I'm going to do a quick post and then jump on my bike and ride over to
the market for breakfast.

"The grounds have been mixed with cardamom, so it has a spicy taste to
it. Some people say it tastes like lemon Joy, but I think it's
delicious!"

I seem to have gotten on an Indian cuisine kick lately not just
Indian restaurants, but also grocery stores, where I can buy those
colorful Indian sweets, made with condensed milk or lentil flour or
sesame seeds, and flavored with pistachio, coconut and mango and all
sorts of spices. Patel Brothers Groceries and Video, 1835 Central Ave.
N.E., Minneapolis, has one of the best selections in town, but you can
also find them across the street at Asia Imports, or at South Asian
Foods in Fridley.

What's the state of the arts in Minneapolis?
http://tcdailyplanet.net/node/12353
by Michael Fallon, mnartists.org
It would be a fine thing if the vaunted art-city status that
Minneapolis grants itself were provably true, and if the lip-service
served up regarding support for local arts actually had the solid
basis in fact that people claim.
