Some of the most important skills needed to boost online civic/community
participation are online facilitation skills.
Way too often we expect/hope technology to will make people play nice and
instead politics online (from local to national to global) is left to
generate a chamber for louder and louder voices that drive the middle or
most people away. The cure or best solution I've seen work again and again
is some good old human facilitation. What we need with our civic
tech/media/advocacy apps are more people with the skills to handle messy
but vibrant people to people exchanges.
So check out the invite below.
P.S. Ironically, I'll be speaking about online communities and the public
sector/services tomorrow: http://po.st/cliftslides

Greetings!
Just a quick update:
As of this morning, we have over 100 people registered for the *Online
Facilitation Unconference 2015*. It's a very diverse group of practitioners
and students of online facilitation, joining us from countries around the
world (Argentina, France, Jordan, Malaysia, Australia, South Africa, to
name a few).
We've made some tweaks to the tech environment this year. Hopefully, it'll
make for a more interactive and easy-to-follow experience.
Introductions and topic brainstorming are getting under way today, and
sessions will happen from Thursday afternoon at 4pm Pacific Time as planned.
Your “NCDDonline” discount will get you *30% off* and is still good through
Thursday:
https://ofu15.eventbrite.com/?discount=NCDDonline
So, if you have:
* insights or resources to share,
* projects to showcase,
* tools to demo,
* ideas to discuss, or
* questions you always wanted to get answered,
we'd love to have you! ;-)
Thanks,
Tim
PS: Thanks to the generous support of our sponsors, we've just added a
“pick your own price” sliding scale option, too. Feel free to share with
your networks!

Hi,
As some of you may know, the International Association of Facilitators
(IAF) is organizing International Facilitation Week
<https://www.iaf-world.org/site/pages/international-facilitation-week> this
coming week, October 19-25. Its purpose is ”to showcase the power of
facilitation to both new and existing audiences and to create a sense of
community among facilitators and their groups worldwide.”
For the third year in a row, we're involved in organizing a parallel online
unconference focused on “*the art and practice of facilitating in virtual
environments*”. Topic brainstorming will kick off early next week, and
sessions will take place over the course of a 48-hour window between
Thursday evening and Saturday. All sessions will be documented and the
results shared with all participants. Have a look at the topics that
emerged during the inaugural event in 2013 <http://ofu2013.org/agenda/>
Some really interesting and useful stuff there. ;-)
A few super early bird tickets are still available today at $9/person.
Details and registration here:
http://ofu15.eventbrite.com
Whether you're already an expert or still completely new to online
facilitation, this is a great opportunity to share, learn and make new
connections. Once again, it's shaping up to be a very international crowd.
Hope to see you there!
Thanks,
Tim
PS: After today, using discount code “*NCDDonline*” will give you 30% off
any available ticket.
