I understand the annoyance but that is only Jack, the guy who represents the
company that runs it, brings the kit and collects the stall-fees. Same with
Summertown. He was even wearing a Go! We Won” type tee-shirt on Sunday.
But the traders generally speaking do not appear to be Brexit oriented - I know
it’s an odd concept - talking to your food suppliers about politics :) But I do
and I’d got the impression from all the ones I regularly talk to that they were
Remainers, and certainly not willing to be public about their support either
way - which is as it should be.
I don’t think you can hold hem responsible for Jack’s outspoken position
though, and boycotting the market hurts them more than it hurts the market
operator!

But was this done by the market organisers or a single stallholder? If
the latter I would have thought that a complaint to the market manager
would be the best course. I don't suppose all the stallholders supported
either Leave or the use of the market for political purposes. Even if
they did support Leave they might well agree that this was really
inappropriate--and would tend to lose them custom.

Any interaction with the market is an endorsement of Jacks moronic and foul
views.
I'm sorry for the stall holders in the 48% of people with brains. But their
food will simply taste like ash if it it is some way connected to the vile
apparition that is UKIP.
Interestingly this Jack character looks like a UKIP supporter too.
Also why do they leave all the crash barriers on New High St? Jack and his
indolent acolytes seem to take a spectacularly long time to pack it up also. Is
it the case they simply can't be arsed to take those bits with them?

Seriously???
That seems like somewhat disproportionate action to me. As far as I am
concerned people are entitled to hold different opinions and promote causes
they support. Where do you draw the line, do you boycott Waitrose because the
person on the checkout voted for the Green party candidate instead of your
preferred councillor?
Quite frankly it hasn't entered my mind to give any consideration as to how
people voted.
Also I don't think that calling someone's opinion 'moronic' in a public forum
is acceptable behaviour. There are many things that I disagree with and
sometimes despair at but your views will not gain any respect with those kind
of comments. By all means challenge other people's views with your own,
explaining why you think their ideas are flawed but personal insults are not
going to win you any friends.
As it happens I am still undecided about the merits of being in or out of the
EU but accept that a democratic vote was taken and we are now going to be out.
As far as I am concerned it is done now and all we can do figure out the best
way to proceed, not continue to fight over what might have been.

Well said Darren!
It's my understanding that the Headington Farmers' Market is operated by
Headington Action - see http://www.headingtonaction.org/what-we-do.html
Jack is contracted to run it.
Presumably any display publicly at the market might have been expected
to be cleared with Headington Action.
I wonder if Jack did that?

I think that is a much more sensible approach to address the issue.
My expectation is that this was likely a case of Jack being overzealous with
his personal opinions without thinking about what is appropriate. Presumably
the trailer is his so he assumed he could put whatever he wanted on it.
Informing him there have been complaints about his use of the trailer for
political promotion and a reminder that it may be mistaken as endorsement by
the market organisers or stall holders and therefore inappropriate would seem
the best course of action to take.
It would perhaps be a good opportunity to remind everyone including the stall
holders that the venue is for the purpose of trading not political campaigning
regardless of the issue.

I like the phrase 'over zealous with his personal opinions'.
A few weeks ago there was a man at Summertown market (I don't know if it was
'Jack', but it sounds plausible) on the 'Vote Leave' trailer having a blazing
row with a passer by. Twenty minutes later the row was still going on, on the
other side of Banbury Road, getting closer and closer to fisticuffs.

Is this forum called e-democracy!! I’ve never seen such foul comments from
anyone. Chris ought to be banned from using the site if he has opinions like
these and expresses them so forcibly!!

What's done is done and cannot be undone. There's no sense in dwelling on the
result and I doubt it will change the price of eggs at the the Farmers' Market.
Back in the day, my father (hailed from Wales) would put his *VOTE LABOUR* on
one side of our front window and my mother (an Oxonian) would put her *VOTE
CONSERVATIVE* on the other side. They remained happily married for 67 years.
And anyway, it was a referendum - not a neverendum. Bored with it.

Can we leave it at that, please. This advertising seemed inappropriate to me
too, but it didn't cause a Brexit landslide in Oxford.... And it is unfair to
boycott the market traders because of one man and his trailer.
It is wrong to imply that Brexit supporters have no brains: Sir James Dyson,
for instance, supported Brexit:
http://www.standard.co.uk/news/politics/eu-referendum-sir-james-dyson-backs-brexit-as-leave-opens-up-poll-lead-a3269161.html
No more Dyson vacuum cleaners for you, Chris, then. It's going to be quite
hard to work out all the products you have to boycott along with the farmers'
market, given that the majority of people voted for Brexit.

Just for the record, Headington Action have spoken to the market manager and
explained that HA is politically neutral and that there can be no political
advertising at the market. The poster in question was on his trailer, not on a
stall.

A forum such as this should be building bridges not resorting to name calling
or insults what is done is done. There are enough people trading insults on
both sides.

I can confirm that, as Liz says, Patrick Coulter and I explained to Jack McLeod
that, while he has every right to display his personal political opinions on
his own vehicle, Headington Action must be, and be seen to be, completely
politically neutral. It is regrettable that the market (as distinct from the
personal opinions of the market manager) was perceived to be associated with
either side in the referendum. We will try to make sure that this perception
does not recur.

It has been pointed out in several posts above I went way too far with my
comments regarding Jack’s views.
So I would like to apologise for any offence caused. Especially to Jack.
However it does not change my general position on UKIP or the Leave campaign &
the disaster it’s all been for this country. This will be discussed ad nauseam
for decades so you’d all better get used to it.
And it’s a shame the Farmers Market has been associated with it.
I will now respect Stephanie and shut up.

So for nearly a month I’ve not actually gone to the farmer’s market - I’ve had
a number of Saturday events that mean timings have been too tight.
But last week I went and was shocked. Obviously having a word with Jack as made
him take his ball home, so only those people who have their own stall equipment
have been able to operate for a few weeks.
Today it looked even worse, so I didn’t even stop. I’ll be at Summertown
tomorrow where no doubt Jack will still be wandering around with a big grin on
his face wearing his Brexit tee-shirt but everyone will be happily shopping
completely ignoring him :)
Charlie, from the egg and cake stall, last week was saying things will soon be
improving - that the stallholders (and presumably the HBA) are making big
efforts to resolve the issues. But at the moment the situation looks pretty
desperate.

Headington Action - which runs the market and ploughs the proceeds (after
running costs) into local causes - has decided that we need to make some
changes. We are very grateful to Jack, who ran the market successfully for many
years. We always knew that switching to a weekly market on Saturday would be a
long-term challenge, and that the summer months can often be a lean time for
traders.
We have now decided to entrust the running of the market to two of the regular
traders - Charlie Manning, whose eggs, cakes and jams many of you will know, as
you may also know Doug's pies on the stall next door. They are already involved
in managing Thame Farmers' Market.
So please, shoppers of Headington, don't give up on your market! We are going
to do our damnedest to rebuild it to the level it has been at during its
heyday, and need your support and good will to make this succeed.
