When I first saw this thing being erected, I thought it was a temporary
structure designed for The Final Four.
But it was actually intended as a permanent object blocking and cluttering the
entrance of the elegant clean streamlined modern Central Library.
It is literally right in the middle of the sidewalk that passes the front of
the library, interrupting a pedestrian thoroughfare in downtown Minneapolis.
(Don't be checking your phone here or you will run right smack into it.)
It closes off the spacious open view to the end of Nicollet Mall and the lovely
harmonious building that resides there.
I am not critiquing or criticizing the artwork itself. (The people who hang
out there call it "The Colon").
It is poorly placed. It should be removed. It never should have been put
there in the first place.
It should be replaced with NOTHING. That is the front entrance to the central
library, and that is all it needs to be.
