To: Members of the Minneapolis Ward 6, Precinct 2 & 3 Neighborhoods
RE: Reminder to Vote Early and at Next Week's Election Polling Sites
Note to All regarding our need for an attentive and quiet audience
during our Caucus on February 6, 2018, and all following Caucuses
Please show up well before the meeting times of all caucuses. When
we say we begin at 6:00 or 7:00 p.m., we need to have everyone seated and
attentive by that time; showing up late for these meeting is discourteous
and disruptive.
The Minneapolis Ward 6, Precincts 2 & 3 caucus meeting places, next
February, may be changed, given the great involvement of more members of
our community voting for our DFL/Democratic candidates in Cedar Riverside
and Seward neighborhoods. We do not yet have known plans for changing to
other meeting locations. So please stay up-to-date on this issue in the
coming months.
In 6-3, where we have traditionally met at Brian Coyle Community Center, we
are finding that more people than can legally be accommodated at the
gymnasium are sharing their involvement and interest in these proceedings,
and we may have to move to University of Minnesota or Augsburg College
meeting areas to accommodate the greater flow of neighbors into the
caucuses. I will keep everyone up-to-date as I learn more information on
our plans for next February's meetings.
Please note, this does not affect our voting polls coming up in November,
next week on Tuesday. The polling stations remain where they have always
been. Please remember to vote either early -- in downtown Minneapolis, or
at your local and traditional voting place next week.
Also, both Ward 6, Precinct 2 & 3 have the most disruptive and disorganized
audiences and communities in the State of Minnesota; and the DFL Senate
District 60 Central Committee and Board of Directors, along with senior
members of the DFL, have decided to find conveners -- meeting leaders --
from outside of the District to take charge of the caucasus until the
community assembles in an attentive, quiet, and non-disruptive manner. We
are looking for intelligent communicators and organizers in the
neighborhood, who speak both English and Non-English languages, to assist
with both reminding people to vote at all elections -- every two years --
and to assisting in teaching members of the East African Diaspora heritage
community the right manners to use while at our February and other caucasus
in the future.
I am looking for young and older volunteers to assist in teaching our
neighbors the appropriate conduct at these meetings. We want to include as
many people as possible, but we must have a disciplined and respectful
audience.
People attending the caucasus are very excited to be part of the democratic
process, but still remain tied to behaviors of African origin that are not
conducive to well-run political meetings in the U.S. When attending our
caucasus, please recognize that we need, and require, everyone to remain
attentive and respectful to the work that must be done within the time
allotted on February 6. People who make noise, who make the "K-K-K-K-K"
cheer, or contribute to abusive and violent conduct will be removed from
the meeting place and kept from taking part in our actions and votes.
Disorderly conduct at these meetings cannot and must not be tolerated by
members of the Party, well-meaning participants from the neighborhood
precinct, or youth who are able to understand these rules. While we invite
people to either bring their young children to the caucasus, or have them
cared for away from the caucus meeting place, we desire that parents take
control of their children. Please feed them before the meeting, and do not
allow them to eat sugary pop, drinks, or candies before or during the
meetings.
Violence at our meetings is not allowed. It is not part of civil society,
and we do not want people to get hurt or feel frightened.
The New Americans who have been coming to our meetings have been gaining
insight and discipline to our needs and expectations. We do not want to
have police or firemen and women taking people out of the meetings. We
must be respectful to one another and not have side conversations going
while speakers are sharing information or giving necessary directives at
the front of the meeting rooms.
Those of us whose families have been U.S. citizens for over 200 years
continue to welcome immigrant and refugee families and family members born
in the United States. Those of us whose earlier generations of families
have taken land from native communities who have been in the U.S. for
thousands and millions of years share our respect and good wishes for
members of the first families of this region.
If you are interested in volunteering to educate newer Americans, and youth
who are still new to our political conventions, please let me know by email
or reply to this forum. I will do my best to assist, and to get senior
members of the DFL to assist in sharing information about our desired
responses and behaviors at our meetings.
Sincerely,
Barry N. Peterson
