Help Me Produce a Talk Show that is Relevant
I will be hosting the Nonprofit "U"
call-in talk show on BlogTalkRadio on Mondays, from 2:00 pm- 2:30 pm beginning
June 22, 2015. I will be podcasting from the Mabel Manning Branch Library, 6
South Hoyne, in Chicago, IL. (Corner of Madison and Hoyne, west of the United
Center)
Nonprofit "U" is a forum where nonprofit stakeholders can discuss the latest
developments in the sector and increase their capacity to serve their clients
and build sustainable communities. My guests will be stakeholders from various
segments of the nonprofit sector, sharing their knowledge and lessons learned.
If I "do this thing right", we will all walk away better prepared to address
the many challenges that lie ahead.
I want to make sure this show is relevant, timely and meets your needs.
Please, take a few moments to respond to the survey. Your assistance is most
appreciated.
Learn How to Navigate Census.gov Like a Pro!
I am working with the U.S. Census Bureau to
facilitate 2-part workshops to navigate the Census.gov website, to be held in
Chicago Public Library branches around the city. Our next two workshops will be
in Uptown and Back of the Yards. The hands-on workshops will provide
participants with an overview of the American Fact Finder and Economic Census
modules.
Participants will learn to use the American Fact Finder databases to tailor
demographic data sets for various geographies, including state, zip code,
census tract and blocks. They will also learn to use the economic census to
better understand the types of businesses, revenues, and employment trends for
a given geography.
Participants are asked to bring their own laptop computers. Register here.
Learn More About Nonprofit Operations
Mark your calendars. God willing, I will be
teaching another section of Operations Management for the Online Certificate in
Nonprofit Managment - University of IL at Chicago. The course will begin July
9, 2015, and will go through August 12, 2015.
This is a great opportunity to get an overview of nonprofit operations,
including understanding the role of a chief operating officer; human resource
management; legal considerations of running a nonprofit; strategic information
technology; performance management and benchmarking. Not only does this course
lay a solid foundation for nonprofit management, but you will have an
opportunity to meet people from all over the country, and perhaps, from other
countries. Find out more about the course, fees and registration here.
Just Checking...
It's that time of year again. Did you know that tax
exempt organizations are 2 times more likely than tax payers to be late with
filing annual returns with the IRS?
There are approximately 1.4 million registered organizations in the United
States (IRS, October 2, 2014). Of this number, 579,114 registered
organizations, or 40%, lost their tax exempt status as a result of not filing
Form 990 for three years in a row. Just two years ago, there were
approximately 1.2 million nonprofit organizations with about 32% losing their
tax exempt status for failing to file Form 990 three years in a row. In
contrast, about 85% of individuals and corporations file their income taxes
(Form 1040) on time. More
