Subject: Proposed Rapid Transit project: Ashton Vale to Temple Meads
Ben,
Apologies if you are not the right person to contact, but I couldn't find
contact details on the Partnership website.
I am currently working for the four Local Authorities in the West of England
(BANES, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire) project managing
their proposals to build a rapid transit route between Ashton Vale and Temple
Meads via Bristol City Centre.
We are keen to engage with local community groups in the development of these
proposals. Cllr Bolton suggested to me on Friday that there may be an
opportunity to meet with members of the Greater Bedminster Partnership and
explain a little bit about the project and let people know about planned public
consultation in November.
Could you tell me if there is an opportunity where you are already meeting that
I could perhaps come along to, do a short presentation and then answer
questions, listen to concerns etc.?
Many Thanks
Sharon

In case it isn't clear, this is the bus rapid transit route running alongside
the Chocolate Path, over the river, presumeably on the old bridge, and then I
presume running down the old railway line, coming out on/near Winterstoke Road,
swinging around the bottom of Alderman Moores allotment field somewhere and
ending up possibly towards the park and ride, new football ground, or site of
the proposed 10,000 homes.
It is proposed that it be bus, rather than any other technology, and if 2 lane,
will be several metres wide, as a track.
It will profoundly alter the feel of the areas it passes through.
Anyway, rather than my speculation, it is an opportunity for you to hear from
the consultant as to what is proposed, how advanced the plans are, etc etc

I have pretty major concerns about what this means to the New Cut , Vauxhall
Bridge, and the City Docks Conservation Area in general. Which I appreciate is
mainly in Cabot Ward, but also Southville Coronation Road.
And for whose benefit is this really? North Somerset dormitory commuters yet to
be invented? And those building houses for them?
Good points its Rapid Transit,
Bad points its Bus, BIG, Borrows a rail route , and where that has happened
elsewhere, eg Cambridge, rail insiders say the heavy rail could have been
reinstated for half the cost, had there been any will to do so. .
I don't know how many of you can remember the "proper" festival of the sea, of
1996, the one with vastly more than the usual "three ships and a street party"
which had the20 entrance fee.
That had two key transport arrangements paid for by the gate receipts, a free
ferry service which crossed the docks in the evening (instead of a 6 taxi
drive!) and a live steam park-and-ride of epic proportions! Well Megabowl to
the Point before it was builtwith an 0-6-0 tank engine and a couple of proper
slam-door carriages brought in by Low Loader. Now this was choo choo heaven and
ran until midnight for the sheer fun of it for three nights!
The tracks have since been pulled up from Ashton Bridge but at the time only
signalling stopped them running on to Parson Street.
Absence of track would have stopped them running to Portbury due to the antics
of camping folk down by the police dogs but that IS another story.
Back on track, megabowl has gone from opposite Greville smythe Park, and the
wimpey housing estate which has currently stalled totally for six months with
piles in the ground andonly a sales centrebuilt, has blocked the track route
with thousands of tons of rubble and broken piles described loosely as a
temporary topsoil heap! They do have a short term rental agreement on the
ground, but they are blocking the access to the Portishead branch.
So I do think there are other things we can do here than a bus route, there's
just more subsidy on buses.
Having walked the course earlier in the year I fear rapid bus meansthe
elimination of the Dual uses of Ashton bridge, wipe-out at butterfly junction,
major reworking of Cumberland road, complete destruction of the industrial
museum railway and the whole look of the North side of the cut. Including at
least one new span for Vauxhall Bridge. Not much of an intrusion into the
locality then!
And it wont cut the traffic jams on Coronation Road caused by people passing
through the backstreets of Southville which we never used to have back the day
either......But recession might.
Enough for one entry I think, thanks if you've read this far, and do come back
with your own opinions of course!
all best

No one seems to have picked up on this.....
I've been out of touch a few days but I now understand rightly or wrongly
that the city, or is it west of England partnership ?? are about to make a
technological decision without consultation , ie bendy busses because thats
what their consultant has been told to recommend, using perverse economics
ignoring figures provided by other options which are inconvenient, (anyone
want to correct me here ???)
and then they wish to consult on the route after, ie perhaps tell us what
they are going to do?? So there?
I hear tell of a farcical "consultation" presentation at Joint Transport
Forum last week, with the notes for a non-existent visual presentation read
out by a girl from her papers after they switched their computer off. (again
can anyone correct me here???)
I do know Bristol needs bendy busses like a hole in the head, as they are a
menace in any direction other than a DEAD straight line. And here, because
of the
docks and hills we drive and ride in circles!
In London despite warnings to motorists on the back about £120 fines for
straying into the bus lane these leviathans can't stick to their own lanes
for toffee. At 25mph and with four lanes in the same direction they use up
to three at once. They are very scary to drive a car beside as you never
quite know when the middle bit is going to take your passengers doors off!
To quote Boris "They wipe out cyclists, there are many cyclists killed every
year by them". OK so Boris's first reality check as Mayor was that he
couldn't rid the streets of bendy busses on day one so he's set to on
ridding the streets of chief constables instead..... smaller target or
something, but for heavens sake with all this negative experience of
London's public transport going back five years or so, where they are just
one failed example within a reasonably integrated system, don't introduce
anything like them in Hotwells, the city centre or temple meads as the great
lynchpin of the future. In Islington it appears they are the very engines of
Gridlock!
Looks like there is an amusing afternoon to be had googling "bendy bus
problems London" or similar key words, some links below, BUT in all
seriousness when we looked up the design standards used in London for bus
stops (researching what might be needed for the new U1 service stops
locally) the stops for bendy busses have to be carefully designed by
engineers to stop them mowing down pedestrians on the pavement as they pull
in or out....
We have been clearly warned so lets not bring them here!!

On which note
Please sign our e-petiton. http://epetitions.bristol.gov.uk/petition.php?id=219
People outside of Bristol can sign.
The text is:
The petitioners request that Bristol City Council supports an ultra light tram
Rapid Transit system. We oppose the current bus Rapid Transit proposal, the
South Bristol Ring Road
and the urban extensions, which they both are designed to serve.
Please pass the link onto anyone you think would sign it. We are aiming for at
1,000 signatures by next Tuesday 14th (well, I like to be optmistic) so please
help us towards our total.

> I am currently working for the four Local Authorities in the West of
> England (BANES, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire) project
> managing their proposals to build a rapid transit route between Ashton
> Vale and Temple Meads via Bristol City Centre.
>
>
>
> We are keen to engage with local community groups in the development of
> these proposals. Cllr Bolton suggested to me on Friday that there may be
> an opportunity to meet with members of the Greater Bedminster Partnership
> and explain a little bit about the project and let people know about
> planned public consultation in November.
