The SENA office just received a crime alert from our neighbors to the south,
NENA. Obviously, many of you in the southern part of the neighborhood are very
close. Here's the text of their message:
Recent Crimes in Nokomis East
(burglaries, thefts from vehicles,
thefts of vehicle parts)
There have been a number of incidents in the neighborhood that residents should
know about. Sue Roethele (MPD) is preparing Crime Alerts, but they won't be
ready until Friday (9/26). In the meantime, here's what we know:
There have been three reported thefts and break-ins on the 4900 block of 37th
Ave this month:
Sept 7 – The front passenger window of a vehicle parked on the street was
broken out and two bikes had been taken from the rear (inside) of the vehicle.
Sept 17 (6-7am) – Two bikes were stolen from an unlocked garage.
Sept 21 (4:30am) – Resident was upstairs with a small child when she heard a
noise and her dog ran downstairs growling. The victim did not see any suspect,
but later that morning, she noticed that the screen was cut on the ground level
and the privacy gate to her back yard fence had been opened. A purse was
missing, along with keys and other items.
NENA also heard from a resident who had a similar incident on the 5500 block of
40th Ave S. A window screen was cut and purse stolen from the home.
In Nokomis East, there have been 35 reported residential burglaries since the
beginning of August. Many of the incidents involve screens being cut and entry
being made through open or unlocked windows.
We also have reports in Keewaydin of vehicles parked on the street having
engine parts stolen off them. This is happening elsewhere in the precinct as
well.
There have been 32 thefts from motor vehicles reported in Sector 3 (which
includes 11 neighborhoods, including the 4 Nokomis East neighborhoods) since
the beginning of August. In addition, there were 22 thefts from vehicles in
parks during that time period.
If you can lock your windows, do so! And remember to check all locks,
including garages. Keep an eye out for your neighbors, and report anything
that doesn't look right. It's okay to call 911 even if your not sure what's
happening. And be sure to report all incidents. This helps the police know
where to provide additional squad coverage. It also helps them identify crime
patterns and issue Crime Alerts.
Resource for crime victims: The Council on Crime and Justice maintains a 24
Hour Crime Victim Hotline: 612-340-5400. You can call if you need any sort of
help or just need to talk to someone.
On the back of this sheet is a home security checklist from MPD. It has some
good reminders. Also, MPD has many safety handouts on it’s website, and tips
for dealing with various kinds of problems such as noisy parties, vulnerable
adults, etc. NENA would be happy to provide copies for block leaders.

I am not sure but is it not homecoming at roosevelt. I believe they were having
a parade so that could explain some of the streets being blocked off.
