Hello all, happy turkey day. Our garage and 2 others were tagged last
night - in the alley running between 27th and 28th avenues south between
41st and 42end street. It looks fairly amateurish rather than
gang-like, but will be a pain to clean up, nonetheless. Are we supposed
to report this to the police?

Hello,
Sorry to hear about the tagging. You should absolutely report it to the police.
It's important for them to have a record to track patterns of occurrence.
This is my first post (after recently joining the group), but filing police
reports is an issue I feel strongly about. Some of my neighbors have been
reluctant to report incidents in the past but our Crime Prevention
representative emphasized how important it is. It's especially helpful when
multiple neighbors call about an incident.

Sorry to hear it. I think we have a new tagger in the neighborhood.
The fire station and SENA office both have graffiti removal supplies. You will
want to be a little careful removing paint from certain material since most of
the removal supplies are corrosive.
You're supposed to report grafitti, http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/graffiti/.
If you do they will take a photo and may use the information to find the people
who are doing it. The more crime reports we have the more police presence we
will have in our neighborhood. They will send out a letter letting you know
that you have 10 days to clean it up otherwise they will hire someone to do it
for you and send you a bill.
Happy Thanksgiving.

Hello folks! Andrew and Lisa are correct. The police do want you to report all
crimes (even minor property destruction) and all suspicious behavior. They use
the data to allocate resources to our neighborhood. Good luck w the clean-up
and happy Thanksgiving. Lea

I'm coming up on 10 years of living in Standish and have had my garage tagged
twice during that time. Both times we used a product called Goof Off to take
the paint off of our vinyl siding and it worked pretty well. I think the
police/fire stations have it for residents to use free of charge.
It is very important that you notify the police of the tagging! If you have a
digital camera, you can take photos & send them with an e-filed report online
(http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/contact/email-form-graffiti.asp). I filed
such reports on both of my taggings and received email confirmation both times.
Remember, the photos constitute EVIDENCE that should factor into any case that
is built against the tagger - make sure s/he is held accountable for ALL of
his/her "artwork"!

In my opinion, a really easy way to report graffiti is to email a
picture to <email obscured> and include a subject
line such as:
"Graffiti 38XX 40th Ave S."
and attach the photo to the email.
If you have a cell phone with a camera, and the ability to email,
this is a quick way to get all the necessary information to the
Minneapolis 311 service. They pass it on to the proper authorities.
Thanks for your help in fighting crime!

God I hate graffiti!!
I cannot stand that we just clean it off, and have to expose ourselves to toxic
chemical paint strippers, which I used on my gargae door and it took the finish
off, so I had to prime and repaint over two times. Big paint in the butt.
This whole theory of repainting over it and then it makes a fresh palette for
the graffitiers to come right back and tag again. People have alot more
patience than I do on this issue, but - yes!call the police, and call the
"Capital Police" as they became involved in some graffiti to a few of our MN
politicians that got tagged ( which that whole thing really irked my ying yang,
as so many of us have been tagged, once, twice and again and a few MN
politicians got tagged and Homeland Security became involved)- and here we have
to struggle to try to get it off our garages and fences over and over and we
don't get any media at all!!!! We don't have money for Cameras, yet we let this
occur over and over. I vote next election we write an Amendment ( maybe one
where there is actually action) to fine anyone commiting graffiti $500,000.00
mandatory fine, and see if that might be a detterent, and then put up a few
cameras across the city, catch a few of these dog-butts and make them pay.

We are 2 blocks north of the original poster, and got tagged last night (along
with another garage on our alley). Ours is a smallish brown name. Anybody else
posting here have the same?
At least it's smaller than the graffiti I got a couple of years ago.

If folks want to post pictures of the graffiti they can do so either via the
website or by simply attaching them to an e-mail reply to this topic or a
new topic. No need to edit the size of your pictures, our software does that
automatically.
One quirk is that if the previous quoting of a past message is left the link
to image for e-mail users is way at the bottom. (Something that will be
dealt with in future technology improvements).

Here are photos of the tags we got last week. I did send them to the
police so they have evidence for the case.
